Far North goes through from December to March yearly. These dates may be expanded by a month either side in times of heavy monsoonal activity. After the wet the build up of new water inside the inland rivers and the flood plains start receding into the Cape’s big river systems. With the big amount of water and with temperatures still warm, is an abundance of food. The Barramundi congregate at these run off places for what is most likely the simplest feed they’re going to get all year. Casting lures or flies into the feeder creeks may be simply heart stopping$. Weipa is called the barramundi capital of Queensland and is our launching pad into the more remote regions of the Gulf, as far as the McDonald, Jackson and Skardon rivers to the north and the Kendall and Holroyd Rivers to the south and as well as the mighty Wenlock, Ducie and Archer rivers. This time of year, coming after the wet, is a really magical time to fish this region and the height of the Gulf barra season. And the weather is usually perfect. (kekoa.com.au)

Weipa s inshore fishery is like nothing I have ever experienced. Gin clear water, reef sharks swimming in 2ft of water, manta rays with cobia following them around in the shallows and queenfish, well there’s enough of them that you may decide which one you want to eat your tempt. GT s, roam the deep reefs, Sailfish ball up bait offshore and in every direction you look, there’s either a sea snake slithering past, turtle grabbing a breath of air or your being pulled into the gunwale of the ship while trying to fight a quick fish to the ship that has a shark trying too eat it. Have a good look at the photograph above with the two guys standing with fishing rods in hand probing for their next fish. There’s a couple of things that I found especially interesting about this photograph. I am sure most of us will 1st of all look to the water and wonder what they’re fishing for. These two are fishing off the west coast of the Cape York and to conclusively say what they’re aiming at at that moment, is most likely only recognized to themselves and the photographer. But having fished this area before I can say that in one cast they may catch a metre long Queenfish and in the next a 75 cm golden snapper. (fishingearth.com)
Today, we’re in for an action-filled day of 4WDing as we follow the southern part of the Old Telegraph Track. The Old Telegraph Track follows the original telegraph line through the Peninsula, and for most of the Cape s recent history was the only available path. The Old Telegraph Line was once the only technique of communication for those living on the Cape York Peninsula. The Telegraph operated from 1885 till 1962 with just two wires sending morse code via repeater stations, old homesteads, along the way. The line was upgraded to radio in WW2 and was still used for telephone cable till 1987 when it was dismantled. (aatt.com.au)
Day 6 broke with us hitching up the hire ship and heading into the Mission River for a day on the rods. The day started with our inhabitant skipper BC putting us on the 1st sand bank from the ship ramp! The river at low tide and in the glare of the increasing sun is very hard to navigate and a great deal of navigation by sight is needed caused by the lack of channel markers and waypoints. Luckily the croc that was sharing our sand bank showed little interest in our skipper juming overboard to attempt and free the ship which left Nicko and I to choose via rock, paper, scissors who could jump in to help BC if obliged! We freed the ship pretty swiftly and headed upstream to a big bridge servicing the mine. (theshortlever.blogspot.com)
