Lake Allatoona Fishing Regulations

On March 23, 2000, Georgia joined with North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida in issuing a joint health advisory for the intake of big king mackerel caught offshore in the South Atlantic Ocean that have been found to have high mercury concentrations. This advisory was issued to offer guidance on the safe intake of king mackerel to the general public and sensitive populations like pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young kids. To catch Chatuge spotted bass, target major-river shorelines and points in 10 to 25 feet of water. A rocky bank is best, and if stumps or brush are present, that is all the better. From the U. S. Highway 76 bridge north to the dam is the best part of the lake in which to find this kind of habitat. The Bell Creek arm, midway up on the east side of the lake, is a good place in which to find spotted bass. Other top picks include Long Bullet and Shooting creeks. Lanier anglers year for striped bass.   although stripers were exposed to poor oxygen conditions last summer,   most recovered and are in great form. The abundant supply of blueback herring, a favored summer forage species by stripers, plays a key role in maintaining a healthy population in Lanier.   Stripers made from successful stockings throughout 1998-2000 will range between 10-15 lb. This year and are projected to be a big contributor to the Lanier fishery.   Numbers of trophy 20-30 lb. stripers also are rising. Below the lake fishing access is via the parking area that also serves as the trailhead for the mountain biking trail. To get to the road leading to the parking area – after passing the turn off for Unicoi Lodge take the 1st paved road to your right as you travel east on GA 356. To fish in this part of the creek you have to get a permit at the front desk of the Lodge, buy a park pass, and have a fishing license with a trout stamp. Fish may be harvested, as indicated by state rules, from May 15 to October 31. From November through May 14, there’s only catch and release with the use of single hook fake lures. Working the double bait rig seems a fish chasing a smaller fish and will drive the stripers crazy. You may be able to on occasion get a double hook-up, too. A popping cork with a fly behind it also casts a long way and works well. For extra excitement add two flies on separate leaders behind the cork. If you hook one fish you’ll frequently see others chasing it trying to get the bait from it. With a trailing fly on the double bait rig a second fish will frequently hit. The Corps offers many access sites to the lake, and many ship ramps are accompanied by parks that have parking, beaches, playgrounds, and restrooms. Some of the ramps are managed by county agencies, community governments, and recreation departments. Nearly all of these lake access sites charge a fee for using amenities, or you may only use the ramps if you also are camping. Overall a good way to fish off the pier is to get and leave some good new bait sitting on the bottom of the water. This bottom fishing technique is supposed to be done in a way that finds a balance between two opposing things. 1st, you want your line and sinkers to be heavy enough to keep your baited hook resting on the sand underwater.
