Over the weekend I learned what makes Scotland pretty darn special. Square sausages – I sh t you not! it is like garlic, and bread, takes the humble sandwich to a new level, then they go and make it with black pudding also! Take it to eleven by ripping open a wholemeal roll, slap on a square sausage and load with creamy coleslaw. Now you’re talking. Perfection in a roll. Simply sensational, trust me. Catastrophe struck when a sluice swung open at Denver and the flow quickly increased to a point where an oz weight was required to hold bottom just five yards out. The flow itself was not a big problem but the volume of nonsense coming through was. A constant barrage of twiggs, branches, lillies and cabbage leaves kept hitting my line and it soon became impossible to keep a bait in position for more than ten minutes. (fishing4fun.co.uk)
Terminal tackle debate among the sporadic zander angler and the regular. Most sporadic anglers will tell you that single hooks and braided hooklengths will catch you more zander. Let me state here and now for the record that this is complete and complete nonsense. A zander’s mouth is nothing but teeth and bone. The idea that it’s sensitive enough to tell the difference between wire and braid is ludicrous, because if that was so it could find chomping down on any fish that has spines, or is bony, pure agony and they don’t. Also, if you use braided hooklengths with livebaits they’re very prone to to get tangled and they’ll get bitten off by pike. (fishingmagic.com)
Blossoming under the tutorship of top angler Eddie Allen at the Black Horse fishing Club in Aylestone, Ivan was crowned the 1961 Midland Angler Match Angler of the Year. He won five of the top matches in the country as well as the Working Men’s Club and Institute Union Championship on the Trent, the Boston Open on the Witham, the Cambridgeshire Open, the Peterborough Hospital Cup and the giant Sheffield Haig and Haig on the center Level Drain. At that time anglers were usually float fishing with centrepin reels, cane rods and old-fashioned floats that had stayed unchanged for many years. (canalrivertrust.org.uk)
The Great the biggest and most important rivers in eastern England, stretching from the far west of Buckinghamshire mile after winding mile across country to enter the sea at King s Lynn in Norfolk. It offers some of the finest coarse fishing in this part of the country. All species are present although some tend to be more concentrated in some parts of the river than others. Chub, for example, tend to be more many in the center and upper reaches while the bream population swells the more you travel into the deeper and more sluggish sections of the river below Huntingdon. The Great Ouse is another river which was officially stocked with barbel and while double figure fish are on occasion stated the biggest was a barbel of 12 lb2 oz taken in Jan 1976-they turn up relatively rarely on angler s hooks. Warned by fishermen, who were catching 4lb zander just two years afterward, Fennell called anglers ‘biologically naive’ and said it was fantasy to propose that the zander were spreading during the Great Ouse system. It may not have been a problem if zander had co-existed with the inhabitant fish. But like a busload of drunken heavy-metal fans at a WI jam-making seminar, zander rampaged through the roach, bream, bleak and dace. But, Iron Maiden fans do not eat their hosts. A several years afterward, all the small fish had gone. One conservative estimate is that the zander were eating more than two million fish a year. (Find more info)
The VAC have full access to this carp-only lake on the Lysander Park fisheries complex at Sawbridgeworth, near Bishops Stortford. The lake holds good numbers of carp to over 35lb, a real ‘runs-water’ but the longer term approach is to remove the smaller fish and develop the lake into a true specimen water. Special access arrangements are in place. (verulam-angling.co.uk)

Denver Complex from the air. To the bottom is the break, then Cut-Off Channels. The new entrance lock to the Cut-Off Channel shines out with its new white sides. Above this is the Ely Ouse exiting through Denver Sluice on angle, or straight on into Cut-Off Channel through the AG Wright Sluice. Above this is the New Bedford River / Tidal River Great Ouse to right of Denver Sluice. There’s a Fox Hire narrowboat on the tidal part between Denver and Salter’s Lode! Next downstream is the Old Bedford Sluice and Old Bedford leading away to the left parallel to the New Bedford River. Just beyond this is Salter’s Lode Sluice and Well Creek wiggling away to the top of picture. (Check out here)
Hi Sue Just returned from the LR today. Discovered a cracking spot at the base of the Aude at Vendres It has a tidal boom across and it caters for both coarse sea types of angler. I can only relate it to a alike wier field on the Trent crossed with the great ouse break channel Reed cover easy access. Local family had 3 carp in the net about 1 kg each Not withstanding the crude plans bites were still coming 6 hook with a worm The river I mentioned in Rivesalts is the major river through the town Ive forgotten the name Now i have someplace to target keep a lookout for my rhd red Picasso early late this June The french family went on to say the carp run to 5 kg in this part of the aude I think it has the possible to produce bigger ! More fish$. (languedoc.angloinfo.com)
