Crucian Carp Fishing In Yorkshire

Take the A19 towards York, turn right onto the A163, turn left at crossroads signposted Skipwith, continue through Skipwith past drovers arms pub and take your next right signposted Thorganby. Follow the road all the way through Thorganby till you reach mini crossroads. I’m lucky enough to have a pond in my garden near Colchester, photo attached . It is an old farm pond which over the years was used as a dump by a last owner and was enclosed by Alders which have deposited their leaves for decades. The result is a pond that is between 1 and 2 feet deep in the winter and throughout the summer big parts of it dry up leaving one area that is only 1 foot deep. In spite of the low depths the pond still had some fish 5 years ago. I could frequently see 3 mirror carp cruising the length of the pond, but I noticed the dead body of one in the pond and shortly after the head of another on the bank. (crucians.org)

The major stock of fish in this water seems to be tench, with bags approaching 70lb a possibility with the right conditions. The average size of the fish vary from 2 to 3lb, with some fish over the 4lb mark. There are some carp in the water in the low twenties but they don’t visit the bank all that frequently. The rudd seem to be doing well, with certain fish over the 1 1/2 lb mark, Roach and perch are present up to nearly 1 lb. Though few, the odd bream over 6 lb have also been taken. Pastures Fish Pond is a privately-owned man-made pool of about two-and-ahalf acres set in calm rural surroundings. There are 50 comfy swims to decide from, some of which have platforms dug into the banks which are flat. The place is peaceful though it does have an open part. There’s a central island and the pond is spring-fed, with an average depth of six feet. The pool holds a good head of carp, tench and rudd with some eels and some perch. There’s a whole mixture of carp, as well as ghosts and crucians. They’re usually small but there are reputedly specimens to 20lb. The tench are of a good stamp up to 7lb while the rudd are many and run up to 1lb. (gofishing.co.uk)

There are lots of excellent waters as well as the Brandesburton lakes, the Motorway Pond, The Tilery and some number of lakes at the Brough Fishery Complex. Lake One is the specimen lake, with mirror carp to 36lb 7oz; there are over 20, 20lb carp in the lake also as 350 other carp from 6lb to 19lb. This was first set up as a mixed fishery, however now has a good name for quality carp and silver fishing in summer, with perch fishing becoming well-liked in the winter months. The perch go to 5lb 6oz which is big for Perch and we’re well recognized for good Perch fishing and could like to continue to be. The Trout Lake is 7. 5 acres set among beautiful clumps of woodland, where you may be able to come and have the choice of either fishing from the bank or a ship. Bank fishing will include wooden platforms, hard standings and wadeable gravel bars. The lake is well stocked, which will include Brown, Rainbow and Blue trout. The lake has a minimum stocking of 2lbs with specimens on a regular basis being banked over 5lbs, with the sporadic double figure fish are caught. The lake record stands at just over 18lbs.
