Department of Keliher held an informational meeting in Yarmouth last week to gather feedback from guides and fishermen about the department’s plans to accomplish the 25 reduction. It was the 1st step in a procedure that will end in May with a change in rules that govern fishing for striped bass in Maine. In the next few weeks, the department will hold three public hearings along the coast. The times and places have still to be declared. (pressherald.com)
. They re ideal baits for the swirling waters below the Topsham Dam. I fish them weighted and unweighted. I ll add them to a bare jig head or onto a bucktail jig and work the entirety of the water column. When I fish them without any important weight I ll sometimes crank them fast so that they skitter and splash across the surface but typically like to dead drift them. I ll cast across the current and let the tempt swing downstream, sometimes adding a twitch. I ll also cast up current and reel up slack as the bait comes back towards me. (mainestripers.typepad.com)
Told me that bigger bass have arrived and the beaches have joined the rivers as productive spots. The dam at the Saco River still is one of the hottest stretches as bass ball up blueback herring against the structure. The shad are thick and many are about this season as one of the most successful shad runs in years. For stripers attempt bait or Fin-S-Fish, Savage Sand Eels or RonZs at Biddeford Pool, Higgins Beach, and Old Orchard Beach. The tip of the week from Ken is to go light on the jighead. Choose 3/8- or -oz heads as opposed to the more common -oz plus. A lighter jighead makes the tempt look more natural in the water. (onthewater.com)
There were no reports of striking fish. But bottom fishing was good in deeper water. The current has settled down, however the cold water near the bottom hasn’t. Captain Robert Johnson says it s still tough fishing out in 100 feet but gets better at 140 and deeper. Mangrove snapper are the more plentiful of the catches, padded with the sporadic gag or scamp grouper, triggerfish, pink porgies, redeyes and the ever-present red snapper. (boatnation.com)
Is in Eliot see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 1 A3 . The access to this body of water is well hidden . Directions are as follows: Drive on path 91 and turn unto York Shore Drive, which leads through a residential development. Turn right on York Pond Road after 0. 2 miles. Go until the end by the circle and look for mail box #6. Get on the driveway but make an direct left on a rough, stony forest road. The access point to the pond is about 700 ft more down on the right. Although a small trailered ship may be launched, the fishing rule book states that motorboats with interior combustion engines are banned on the pond. (amazingfishametric.com)

This past Thursday I guided repeat client Brian Stack. Brian had some good strikes fishing a Stonefly/ Pheasant rear combo in the 1st pool. This pool generally produces some good strikes before we have time to change our hook-set. The fishing through the next few pools was slow with some subtle bites. Then around 2pm the fishing turned on and Brian began picking off browns and rainbows on a size 16 pheasant rear dropped off of a Purple Haze Mayfly. The fish were taking the dropper just as the flies swung at the end of the drift. The take was so subtle you had to have faith it was a fish and not the flies bumping submerged leaves. This is the 1st that I have heard of this, Thanks for bringing it up superfly. The destruction that the pike could bring to the complete st. George river fishery is pretty considerable. It could not only be counterproductive to the job that the state has done to set up a well recognized trout fishery on the river, however it could surely because them to rethink the effort that they’re putting into stocking and river restoration. This is pretty upsetting news. If you look at how fast the belgrade lake system reproduced the pike it’s somewhat disturbing, because the st. George system is a pretty bit smaller. The bay has ‘historically provided crucial spawning and nursery habitat for anadromous fish … and abundant forage for migrating waterfowl, ‘ Bowdoin College helper professor Neil McCubbin testified earlier this summer at a Maine Board of Environmental Protection hearing. McCubbin, on behalf of the Natural Resources Council of Maine, argued against the board granting new wastewater permits to the Verso Mill in Jay, arguing that the ‘vitally important ecosystem in the State’ gives the only refuge for juvenile shad, alewife and striped bass from fish and birds. Continuing pollution, he said, has ‘nearly surely stalled the ecological recuperation of Merrymeeting Bay. (nrcm.org)
The record for Atlantic salmon returns to the Merrimack River since the last restoration efforts began in the early 1980s was broken this week. More than 340 salmon had been counted at the fish lift in Lawrence, Mass, as of Tuesday, June 21. It seems the bulk of the run is over, as only some more fish are trickling in each day. We’re lucky to get these numbers in the 1st year of a study to assess the possible for natural salmon reproduction in the Merrimack River watershed. The goal is to monitor released Atlantic salmon using radio tags and redd spawning spot counts to see how many fish will effectively spawn in the fall. (outdoornews.com)
