I’ve been out to Christmas Bay 3 times in the past couple weeks and its generally active and its exactly the kind of hole I’ve been looking for since moving to Houston 2 years ago, unfortunately I haven’t done too well on the catching side. Just some rat reds and small specks, however no keepers but a big, easily tag red did swim inside some feet of me in about 30 inches of water. So am I supposed to be fishing the really shallow grass? Or wading deeper and trying to work the dropoff? Maybe fishing near the crab traps? And what baits am I supposed to be trying? Live baits in the shallow grass just have been digging in and hiding and making a mess of themselves, I’m thinking topwaters or shad assassins now but I could like to get them weedless. My fianc I work with in Africa and myself left from Tiki island at about 6:00 am heading about 50 miles off shore. In my slow old ship this took about 3 hours. At this stop the 1st five fish were over 12lbs, then the sharks showed up. There must have been a million of them because we couldn t catch anything else once they started. The Core of Engineers is dredging the ICW as part of their normal dredging program using a permiting system that was accepted some number of years ago when the grass was much much smaller in extent. They’re operating under the Laguna Madre seagrass window from November to March when they’re allowed to dump a thin level of sediment over the sea grass while it’s in winter dormancy. This thin level is really supposed to help the grass regrow. For exact fishing places and methods, I’m conducting one-on-one classes of the Galveston East Bay System. We’ll use up a half-day trip exploring that bay and the methods and timing of fishing there.
