Yampa River Fishing Report Steamboat

Spring fishing pick up in the Yampa valley. With the warmer mid day temps new water is opening every day. We have seen our best fishing between the hours of 11 and 3. With the cooler water temps fish have moved to there winter lies. Attempt fishing deep nymph rigs in the slow looks and inside bends look for fish increasing to small Blue Wings and midges mid day. Warm temps. Through the weekend should supply some excellent fishing. Ice through town is starting to break up with more water open everyday. The rear waters of stagecoach and sarvis creek will probably be the most productive. If fishing in town; search for slower, open water. Throw stoneflies and worms above small midges. Sight fish when you may be able to, however there are so many fish in this part that if you’re to get good drifts through probably water slow tailouts, runs and deep pools you’ll catch lots of fish blind fishing. 7. 5″ 4x leaders for nymphing, yarn or pinch on strike display, #4-#1 split shot, 4x-6x flourocarbon tippet. Lead attractor flie that you’ll want to have are a #18 pink or Red Flashtail San Juan, #16-18 Orange or Olive Hunchback Scud or 6mm troutbeads in mottled glow roe or mottled snow roe. . We took a half day early evening guided trip to private water and caught some fiesty trout, and had lots of bites. Our guide, Darren has 17 years guiding year round in Steamboat. He coached us and helped us in every way from untangling our lines to netting the fish. Straight line mentions the way your line is supposed to end up after a cast. A Colorado fishing license is needed for anybody 16 and older. Nonresident fees: yearly, $56; five-day, $21; one-day, $9. Colorado residents can get an yearly license for $26 $1 for seniors 64 and older . The Yampa is another Colorado classic in all parts. On the side from the sheer beauty that’s northern Colorado, the river and it's fish are something every angler should have on their list.
