I stole friend who was snowshoeing on the Willow Flowage this weekend at sunset. If you have never taken the time to explore the Willow it’s really a treasure worth exploring particularly if you have your ship in the summer. Otherwise snowshoeing at sunset on ice is a good way. it’s thousands of acres of wilderness flowage with few houses only 10 – 15 minutes from the resort based on what part you head out on. to get lost on the flowage if you don’t know your way around is a possibility. I know some number of groups that like to fish on the flowage and say it’s as close to remote canadian fishing as you may be able to get in Wisconsin. (blackscliffresort.com)
Snow cover has melted with few snow drifts. I forgot to measure the ice thickness, however there’s about 20- to 24-inches of ice. This week’s temps will be to get back to normal with colder nights and a possible cold blast for the weekend. This will keep the ice around a little longer. Stay off the flowages with trucks! Get useful info before you head out fishing! there’s still time to have some great ice fishing expeditions! This period will rely on how many cold nights we’ll have. It may be one to two weeks or one month if it gets really cold. (postcrescent.com)
Perch: Good. Access to deeper water as ice thickens adding to reports. Deeper water 18-24 perch taking wigglers or red spikes tipped on Perch Talker rigs, Hali jigs and Northland Forage jigs. Less numbers, however, better size perch found fishing soft bottomed, weedy depths of 7-10 . These fish are more interested in meat. Medium fatheads, gob of waxies on a Vingla spoon or #2 Swedish Pimple working well. While depth numbers, shallow fish size with perch of 10-13 being caught by punching and moving. Wooded trails traverse the lake country around Lake Tomahawk, Minocqua and Woodruff. Off-path near Minocqua you may be able to tour the Northwoods Wildlife Center where injured animals are cared for before being set free. Your ticket out of Minocqua is a six-mile ride south on the Bearskin State Trail to Hazelhurst. Riding east on Trail #6A from Hazelhurst, then south on #AA and #51A brings you to the snow-covered Willow Flowage. You will access the flowage near some number of private resorts and restaurants. Given good ice, there will be a marked east-west trail across the flowage. Riders are encouraged to check ice conditions daily and to stay on the marked trail. (holidayacres.com)
As stated above, we’re vertical jigging, usually using hair-jigs or Vibratos. Captain Paul tells us that the fish aren’t feeding, they’re reacting to a disturbance in their territory. So making a commotion on the bottom will get these walleyes stirred up, and react to protect their area. we’re catching all males, and they put up lots more of a fight in open water than the females we caught through the ice. The jigs we use don t have bait, which proves that these fish are very violent. (Browse around these guys)
Got back up to the Minocqua area this weekend for a family vacation, while the women went shopping and had spa days the men all went ice fishing. Fished both Lake Minocqua and Arbor Vitae and both were hard bites and fish seemed to be uninterested in biting. Spent most of our time on Minocqua because we could see crappies and gills on the camera just fought to get them on the ice. Late afternoon was the only time we could find and consistent biters otherwise for most of the day we use up hole hopping and plucking a dumb one here and there. Tried tip downs, an array of different baits but ended up coming back to the same jig and plastic I have used up there all year, however boy was it a hard bite. (in-depthoutdoors.com)
Ron and I trade guide trips some number of times yearly, enjoying the experience of somebody else running the trolling motor for a change. When challenged by my volunteer fire department to offer a fish fry last April, Barefield came through by taking me to his Lake Wisconsin hotspot. Our joint bound of 50 crappies was enough to feed all the firefighters, their wives and kids – and other people I have never met before. Happiness is a crappie filet. The shallow bite in Lake Wisconsin is right around the corner in what can be our 1st open-water opportunity. (gameandfishmag.com)
A fire ring is made available at each campsite. Build fires in the fire rings only. Fires may not be left unattended, and before you leave the fire, it must be totally extinguished. You’re allowed to gather wood that’s dead and down for your fire. You MAY NOT cut standing trees if they’re dead or alive or live brush. Standing dead "snag" trees supply priceless wildlife habitat, and they’re protected. You MAY NOT use a chainsaw to cut firewood— dead and down wood. (wvic.com)
