Whiskeytown Lake Fishing Regulations

Went fishing 10AM and 1PM on 01/03. Was clear and cold, and the lake was down about 25 ft. Tried a range of bass lures crankbait, jig & pig, Texas Rigged Creature Bait concentrating on rocky points and weed edges off the shore with no result. Used a silver kastmaster and hit a small rainbow about half a foot . After that, the only other strike I got was on a gold kastmaster but never landed the fish. Kastmasters have typically generally been productive at this place. (fishhound.com)

The kokanee Oncorhynchus nerka is a small landlocked form of sockeye salmon that was discovered firstly in some freshwater lakes of the Pacific Northwest. Springer fishing was spotty this week with the water levels fluctuating. We need calmer water and it s projected to be back to more fishable conditions this week, said guide Troy Whitaker at U-Save Tackle in fundings Pass. Best bets are back bouncing roe or sand shrimp, or back troll Kwikfish with a sardine wrap. On the area lakes like Selmac and Lost Creek, trout anglers are scoring by trolling Wedding Rings with a nightcrawler or Power Maggot attached. The bank anglers are scoring on Pautzke salmon eggs with a marshmallow attached or Power Baits. Whiskeytown is favored by locals due to 30 ft 9. 1 m visibility of its waters, and wildlife that surround the lake. There are many breeding pairs of bald eagles that nest on the lake’s shores. Sharing the habitat are black bears, mountain lions, blacktail deer, turtles and raccoons, among other wildlife. The four-to-six inch Kokanee were washing up on the Lewiston Lake shore for a quarter of a mile on Tuesday evening when this reporter kayaked by. Early estimates, given to the Trinity Journal, had the losses between 200 to 400. The source estimated the die-off at 2, 000. At the meeting the Commissioners also heard testimony about having a Selected Marked Fishery for the Trinity for Coho salmon. I’m happy to say there was better testimony for this but the cost may not equal the benefit so there’s more study to be done and hopefully NOAA/NMFS will step up to help on this. The alternatives are to attempt and harvest the extra hatchery Coho or decrease production. The return of Hatchery Coho has far exceeded the native Coho return that they’re interfering with the recuperation of native Coho salmon.
