Westport Wa Salmon Fishing Report

Throughout the 18 anglers took part in the late-season salmon fishery, landing 7 Chinook, 2coho, and no pink. Between October 1 and October 11, a total of 170 Chinook 70 over the late-fishery guideline of 100 Chinook, however inside the total season area chinook guideline and 13 coho 13 of the late-fishery sub-quota were landed. On our way out, at about 25nm, I started seeing mass amounts of birds cruising the skies. They weren't crashing the water, however they were certainly inquisitive. I looked at my temp gauge and the water color and my distance from port and thought hell no. Too cold, too dirty, too close. Keep going. We went another three miles and I KID YOU NOT. A TUNA jumped about 5-10 feet right in front of the bow. Any closer and I could HAVE HIT HIM! I started yelling JUMPERS, JUMPERS, JUMPERS!!!! My crew is like WTF! WHERE? I look up and 100 yards off the bow, bullets are blitzing the surface and the birds were going nuts. (defiancemarine.com)

The best king fishing is from the first of October till the center of November. We catch lots of kings, silvers and chum this time of year this is the time of year we see the most salmon fishermen on the rivers . When hunting season opens the fishing pressure on the rivers drops and we have lots more river to ourselves. As we get towards the end of November there are far less kings around, however the bigger and more violent silvers show up in full force and are around till the 1st part of December mid -November to early Dec is when we have our best luck twitching jigs and casting spinners for the silvers, this is an very fun way to fish! . It’s suggested that after you enter the major river and can see west with the south jetty on your left in the distance, head straight out the southern center of the river to #11, the next one will be #9.   This #9 buoy is beyond the end of the south jetty by about half a mile.   If you’re going to meet any roughness it’ll be about this #9 buoy to beyond #8, which is about 500 yards.   From #9 you want to head toward #8 but based on the currents and roughness off the old submerged jetty, you may have to hold somewhat north of it.   When you get beyond the old jetty turbulence, you then can head close to either side of #8. This past Wednesday I had the pleasure of fishing with old time friend Jeff Witkowski of Darrel & Dad's Family Guide Service on Lake Chelan. Jeff was wanting me to come over and sample the Winter Kokanee fishing for quite some time. After taunting me with photos of some remaining catches this past month I made the choice to go. So Tuesday afternoon my friend Keith Yamaguchi and I made the trek over the mountains to Manson. After a good nights sleep we meet Jeff at the Mill Bay launch at sunrise, quickly loaded our gear onto his ship and proceded up lake to where he had found fish earlier in the week.
