The Pacific Blue Marlin Tag & Release Tournament TART, now in its 26th year, promotes billfish conservation through a tag and release tournament format while educating viewers about the biology, science and behavior of blue marlin and other billfish species. The tournament format features five boats, five captains and five anglers competing over a five day span ship to ship, captain versus captain and angler versus angler. Deep sea fishing in Hawaii is a favorite pastime of locals and tourists alike. The ‘Reel Wahines’ were lucky to be on the Renegade with Captain Loyd, Johnia and Percy. Captain Loyd was fishing in these waters for over 40 years. They clarified to us that the marlins are in their breeding season now and the males are overly violent. The males really weigh lots less than the females, so there were some number of tag and releases with both the Billfish and Wahine Tournaments this week. Center hitter Olivia Magill earned AVCA All-America honorable talk about and all-Big West 1st team honors last season. Magill, who is a senior this year, led the conference last season in hitting . 405 and blocks per game 1. 34 . Also returning are all-Big West 1st team members Tai Manu-Olevao and Nikki Taylor. Manu-Olevao led UH with 289 kills and was second on the team with 34 aces last year as a junior. Taylor finished 2014 with 239 kills and 79 total blocks. This rescue is a perfect example of why mariners must make sure they have good safety equipment and dependable communications before heading out on the water, said Lt. Jessica Mickelson, Sector Honolulu’s Public Affairs Officer. Thankfully Mr. Wichman was still able to use his cell phone after capsizing and entering the water. Sector Honolulu was able to work in conjunction with 911 dispatch to get a GPS position of the capsized vessel from Mr. Wichman’s cell phone enabling Coast Guard rescue crews to arrive on scene at the exact place of distress instead of having to conduct a search.
