Ugly Stik Intercoastal Fishing Rods

I have been using Ugly Stick rods as part of my fishing arsenal for over 20 years. While they aren’t top counter rods, they have generally been reliable and tough. I bought this Intercoastal rod expressly for a trip to the Gulf. Good thing I brought some number of back up rigs as this rod snapped in half about 1' above the ferrule on the 1st day. I was tossing a 1/2 oz casting spoon and the upper 1/3 of the rod broke cleanly off throughout the cast. I had noticed that the rod seemed to be making lots of creaking or cracking noises as it loaded on each cast. Maybe I just got a factory defect? I did notice that the reel could not stay seated for long as I was needing to tighten down the locking system after every half dozen casts or so. (walmart.com)

I bought two of these inshore choose rods and have been an avid user of ugly stiks and still use the coastal and ugly stik lite and could buy either of them again. But, both inshore selects that I bought broke about six inches down the top of the rod, and not on big fish but a 4 pound bass and a 5 pound jack crevalle. I have a friend who I fish with at least three times a week and he had one break in the same spot. I like them better than the regular Ugly’s and they cost the same and pair it with a cheaper reel, I have heard good things about Diawa and quantums in the cheaper price range. You will know shortly time if you like it and if you do not you did not bust the bank purchasing it. Just grab an ugly stik tiger no sense in beating a high end rod up on the pier when an ugly stik will handle it all. I favor using a longer rod for the casting distance but 7 ft will be plenty on the pier but 8 ft has generally been my in between spot. They have an ugly stik tiger model # BWD2200-2 its 8 ft ML action rated 1-4 oz lures sounds like it could be a good rod for all around pier responsibility. Now if your only aiming at big bat rays or sharks you may want to most likely get a MH or H action rod for a bit more power incase you get into a big one but I don t have doubt you could catch one on the ugly stik I suggested it’ll just take a bit more finesse ha. I have 8-10 inshore outfits, I use the proper one for the species I am fishing for and the place beach, ship, pier jettie, etc, so recommending the perfect rod and real is hard. I inshore fish just about everyday, my observation is the most well-liked all around set up is an ugly stick with 4 or 5000 series reel, I see more Penns the Penn fight is becoming well-liked than anything. My 1st suggestion could be checking a saltwater forum in your geographic place and see what those anglers are using. My experience in using the Big Water ship BWB 1140 MH 7. 0′ Ugly Stick was rewarding. This rod is superb when fishing deep waters using bottom bouncers aka Halibut rigs. 1st, you may like to know that mother is more well-liked among fishermen. People just can’t get enough Ugly Stik. This may be caused by the production quality of the mother. Ugly Stiks glass pieces are made of graphite of good quality, the base of the root. What that means for the fisherman, indeed it can take a beating. Think about- it is generally more important to buy a good costly reel anda crazy costly rod. Why?? A reel has "moving parts" and can not easily or cheaply be replaced, whereas, a cheap rod can still function. With correct care a well-made reel can last 10 plus years – BUT – costly rods will degrade and usually have a shorter lifespan- esp in saltwater. (Get more)
