To my a guide, I’m looking for him or her to be a important conduit of info. By fast tracking me into water that can offer me the best chance of hooking up, and putting me on an accelerated learning curve in employing methods to fool the fish. Shortly, I’m adopting economy of effort. Shane French ticks all the above boxes and more. He’s boundless enthusiasm and compassion for his dear Taupo fishery and will generally put maximum effort into a days guiding to ensure the best possible chance of success. If your prerequisite is to sample the challenging wilderness of the bast backcountry, or simply to have a more pedestrian day on one of the many excellent local rivers, nothing is too much trouble. Adding to the fishery are brown trout, which average six or seven pounds – though every year fish twice this size are reeled in. But in the very clear water, they’re infamously challenging to fool and will test your craft. Consequently this awe-inspiring area attracts the most experienced and patient of anglers, many of which will also fish for the browns after dinner and into the black. This is where the specialty of a friendly local guide may be priceless – the best are able to discern the wraith-like trout amid the ripples, runs and rapids, coupled with a real passion for the sport. Arguably the plateau fly fishing experience is the remote upper Tongariro – open for fishing between 1 October and 30 June. The only access is by raft and this may be a safe and cheap choice for two to four anglers to add and hire a raft and rafting guide. Tongariro River Motel – in co-operation with RaftingNZ – strongly recommends this trip as an achievable cheap mix of white water rafting and back country fly fishing experience. Tongariro River Motel’s iMovie illustrates what anglers may expect. The passengers are Jason Klivington, Brot & Kelly Bishop three American tourists and Kiki from Sweden – all from Tongariro River Motel with RaftingNZ’s guide on their 1st trip through the upper river gorges. About now some number of trout started to rise so I removed the Stimulator and nymph rig and replaced it with a #14 parachute spent spinner stripped peacock herl body, golden pheasant tippet rear and black brown hackle . I carefully waded in behind the hind most increasing trout and pitched the fly about 6′ ahead of it. The fly landed softly and the trout rose in slow motion to engulf it purposefully. Passing on my regards to the Queen I struck carefully and set the hook. The trout was small 2 lb but it charged about the rear for some number of minutes before I could beach and release it. An important event in the short life of the Advocates occurred on the 12 November 2003 with the inaugural meeting of the Tongariro River Management Forum. At that meeting convened by Environment Waikato and held in Turangi, the case for a Tongariro River Management Forum was spelled out, terms of reference were established and membership was confirmed. The Advocates have felt the need for a public forum whereby concerns about the river may be discussed, Now with special rates being imposed for river restoration and sizeable mitigation financial support from the hydroelectric utility available to Ngati Turangitukua, ratepayers and friends of the river sought some system whereby accountability may be rendered observable. This isn’t a flash motel but is remaining for service and buildings. Ross and Pip go out of their way to make guests welcome. Turangi is famous for trout fishing and this motel is more like a friendly fishing lodge. The units are old but scrupulously clean with full cooking buildings, refrigerators, ovens etc; heaters for the cold and fans for the hot weather. Beds are comfy with heaps of blankets, quilts etc for colder nights. There’s a free laundry, free wifi, a free smokehouse for trout, free bike hire, and Ross has some fishing gear available though local tackle shops operate full hire services. (plus.google.com)
