Tomales Bay Leopard Shark Fishing

Tamar, I have gotta concur with Hank. It was some number of sharks before I learned that the ammonia smell uric acid was not a needed part of shark fishing. I used to toss them in the cooler, fish all day in NC heat, and clean fish at night. I’d soak them in milk overnight and the meat was generally new and sweet. The biggest problem I had was that the smell frequently lingered in my nose or in my imagination, so I’d smell it although my dinner guests did not. I seldom ate sharks the same day I caught them. Fall weather is typically clear and crisp, with sporadic foggy days. The rainy season can begin as early as October. Low temperatures may be in the 40 s and 50 s with highs in the 60 s and 70 s. In the early fall, Tule elk go into rut. The male elk’s bugling call, used to round up his harem and show his strength to other males, may be heard on the bay from the bordering hillsides. It was late summer 1994, and I was fishing at Blackie’s Pasture in Tiburon. On the other side of the peninsula from the fabled Elephant Rock pier. This is a magnificent summer evening spot, presented to me by one of my great friends and long-time fishing buddies, Mike Rapoport. I should also talk about that it was a manly competition with Mike years ago that started the species list; do not send him hate mail. Mike grew up in Tiburon, and he knows the area pier by pier and rock by rock.
