The Nestucca Bay NWR near Pacific City is host to a range of Canada geese, as well as the Aleutian, dusky, western and cackler races. They can be seen from Hwy 101, just north of Neskowin. To sort out races of geese, or read neck collars, binoculars or a spotting scope are useful. Last year there was a rare visitor, a tundra bean goose; it stayed at the NWR a pretty while. The almost all-white snow goose is an sporadic visitor also. (dfw.state.or.us)
The Little Nestucca, is open May 23-July 31 for adipose fin-clipped spring Chinook salmon. Spring Chinook aren’t stocked in this river and the fishery is restricted to a small number of strays from other rivers. Three Rivers is open April 1 – July 15 below the hatchery for adipose fin-clipped spring Chinook and adipose fin-clipped summer steelhead. While Three Rivers receives significant fishing pressure, fishing success may be good as fish tend to congregate in the river below the hatchery. Bank access and parking are available off of Hwy 22 now downstream of the hatchery. Small 1/8 or 1/16 oz jigs floated under a bobber may be efficient for summer steelhead on Three Rivers and other regions. (dfw.state.or.us)
The Nestucca county with better-recognized Tillamook Bay-area rivers to the north, and it’s well outside some of the North Coast s bigger towns. But with good runs of fall and spring chinook and winter and summer steelhead, this year-round stream between Tillamook and Lincoln City is far from undiscovered. In fact, the drive is just over an hour from Salem and about two hours from most of the Portland area, putting it inside easy reach of many Oregon anglers. (bestfishinginamerica.com)
Yearly state and federal caps are set for sport fisheries as well as black rockfish, yelloweye rockfish, canary rockfish, cabezon, greenlings and others. When a species harvest cap is reached or is being approached, rules can be changed in-season to stop or slow the harvest of that species. In-season changes may include but aren’t restricted to reduced bag limitations, a change in size limitations, non-retention of a specific species, area closures and season closures. Check the rules before you fish on ODFW s web site or with calling a Marine Resources Program office. (eregulations.com)
Anchor anglers participating in the wobbler fishery continue to report occasional results. Those fishing downstream of Warrior Rock now have to look for fin-clipped fish, keeping only chinook or coho missing theirs. Those have been challenging to come by. Anglers upstream of Warrior Rock are reporting just to good success, particularly in the morning where wobblers are taking fish in the 17 to 23 pound range. Bag limitations differ by river reach so check rules carefully. The Bonneville fishery is hit or miss but plugs and back-bounced eggs are taking just numbers of fish as passage is peaking in the neighborhood. (steelheadu.com)
And their official web site has links for fish and wildlife for the state of Oregon. This web site isn’t the official Department of Fish and Wildlife web site. The Department of Fish and Wildlife ODFW is accountable for defending and enhancing all Oregon fish and wildlife. The agency has a large range of responsibilities from operating hatcheries to selling hunting and fishing licenses to advising on habitat protection for Oregon’s diverse wildlife populations. ODFW works closely with other agencies, volunteers, property holders, hunters and anglers to balance protection of fish and wildlife with the economic, social and recreational needs of Oregonians. Pacific herring showed up in Yaquina Bay and Coos Bay in big numbers last week, which means they may be entering the other estuaries also. It s spawning time and schools of this important forage fish may come and go during the season. Jigging for herring is a good way to introduce kids to fishing. Use a many-hook herring jig from a dock or pier. Many anglers catch herring this time of year to use as halibut bait; salmon, on the other hand, favor a higher-quality herring found in bays afterward in the year. ‘The sea was mad that day my friends’ Costanza, 1994 . Swells were 5-8 feet in the bay and 12-15 feet just beyond the bay breakwater. Luckily disregarding everyone’s advice the last day, I took my Bonine seasick pill some number of hours before the trip. Some took theirs on the ship while departing the dock – not enough time for it to kick in because they were barking at the buoys inside the 1st hour. We started out in the open ocean because Bob had a halibut honey hole where 40+ lb halibut was caught the two last days. We made some number of loops in these 15-foot swells, going uuupppp and dowwnnnn for at least an hour. (backcountrychronicles.com)
If the spring quota hasn’t been caught by the time that these dates are finished, the back-up dates will continue beyond June 4 to every other Thursday, Friday & Saturday established upon available left over quota. The one available summer opener that I’m wanting to target will be Friday & Saturday, August 5 & 6 out of Newport Yaquina Bay . Also, the near shore Halibut fishery will begin June 1 and remain open 7 days a week through the summer till that separate quota was caught. (chinookguide.com)
The diversified stocks we enjoy are managed under an international treaty between the U. S. And Canada. Yearly, a complex statistically resulting number called the Abundance Index AI is resulting to reflect the in general abundance of chinook salmon for the coming season. The preseason AI came in low in 2013, we had progressively more rigorous rules about retaining chinook over the course of last summer. The experience on the fishing grounds and the real returns this fall propose that the AI was off to the low side. Big returns of salmon have been seen during the range, as well as a near record return to the Columbia. (anglingunlimited.com)
