THE MANZANAR FISHING CLUB is a feature-length documentary that chronicles the World War II internment of Japanese Americans from a distinctive perspective: through the eyes of those who defied the armed guards, barbed wire and searchlights to fish for trout in the bordering waters of the Eastern Sierra. By emphasizing the evacuees’ personal stories the film shows how a courageous few were able to take back times of dignity and freedom through the simple act of fishing. Tries to explain how different types of trout golden trout, rainbow trout, etc. firstly found their way to the lakes high in the Eastern Sierra, the film’s strength lies in the testimony of Japanese Americans who snuck out of camp if it meant hiding in garbage cans to go fishing. Great! My son and I made that trip in 2008, then again in August of 2011 and caught some the Colorado Cutties. What a great ‘can list’ fish. Not for the feint of heart, however so worth the effort. Bagged a couple of fourteen thousand foot summits while I was there too! We 1st learned about the hidden stash reading Cutter’s book also. Then gradually we put together the pieces of the puzzle and deduced the exact lakes that hold the fishery. Not too lots of people know about it, and I applaud your capability to write up the report without mentioning the exact place. And how apropos to talk about The Manzanar Fishing Club. "The whales the surface siphoning all the krill in through their baleen. I have never seen anything like it. Both whales were juveniles with a length of roughly 20-25ft. At one point the whales came right up to the ship nearly touching the hull of the sailboat with their faces. One of them followed the ship for 20 yards or so! My father’s story.   As a young boy, he was incarcerated at the Poston Relocation Center in the Arizona desert throughout World War II, and now he’s a Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He went from being wrongfully suspected of being a military threat as a 7 year-old and unjustly imprisoned, to now serving at the second highest level of our government’s Judicial Branch. I’m not only proud of my father’s own accomplishments, however his journey also reminds me of the importance of our Constitution, and the greatness of our country for having recognized the injustice of the internment, and for opportunities for all people. Really enjoyed our stay here in a FHU pullthru. Paved roads, level sites with picnic table and fire ring/grill. Good sized sites, and they spaced us out instead of crowding everyone in one small area. Utilities well-placed and good. Laundry ok, however a little costly. Big fenced pet area. Small store with good supply of basics. Staff was great, useful and economical. Went to office to say that with the 30+mph winds one day, a branch was sometimes rubbing on slide out topper, and someone came out now and took care of the problem. I started using Miso because I had hoped that, by keeping up with friends’ & internet acquaintances’ & strangers’ watches, we could open up new dialogues about interesting films.
