The piers, which can have excellent fishing, are high above the water. This isn’t for everyone, so the area around the pier has many legal spots to fish from shore. From these spots one can access the edges of some deep channels excellent for snook and have lots of unfettered access to big flats shallow water regions. These regions are typically less than chest deep at most high tides and hold red fish and spotted sea trout, most of the year. In the warmer months migratory fish move through the area as well as snook, cobia, tarpon, sharks, Spanish mackerel and in the deep water around the piers sometimes some kingfish. (en.wikipedia.org)
What makes these piers distinctive is the fact that you don t have to lug your gear to fish like most other shore-bound places. It s a good thing, because the north pier is of a mile long and the south pier stretches 1. 5 miles! you may be able to drive on both piers and park right where you want to fish. Also, both fishing structures have clean restrooms and well-equipped bait and tackle shops. While I ve encountered mackerel frenzies at both piers, I favor to fish the south pier for some key reasons. 1st and primary, the south pier is much bigger, which gives lots of elbowroom. Throughout the week I on occasion have the complete pier to myself! also, the bottom around the south pier features a more steady slope to deep water of the close shipping channel. Danny Stasny from Island Discount Tackle at Catchers Marina said there had been a lot of big trout around the bulkhead — the flats off the mouth of the Manatee River — and a decent snook bite in north Sarasota Bay. Anglers can target the snook on top-water plugs with some of the cloudy mornings that are inevitable during this winter. He said anglers have also done well on grouper, trolling the Sunshine Skyway Bridge shipping channel or fishing some of the rock piles in the bay. He’s also heard of good Spanish mackerel and bonito bites off Bean Point. (islander.org)
New cut baits were the choice for tasty mangrove snapper this week. Anglers can get 3 or 4 nice-sized chunks off of each sardine or herring. Bait is best kept on ice it doesn’t have to be kept alive to be efficient for snapper . Freshly caught bait is generally better than frozen, however frozen baits can catch fish at times. The one live bait exemption for snappers may be the small ‘silver dollar’ pinfish favored alive for monster mango hunters at the piers. Baits were frequently set out using Size 1/0 black nickel circle hooks and 1 – 3 oz. Of weight based on the tide. Incoming and outgoing tides can both be efficient because anglers can fish the reefs on an outgoing tide, and the major bridge or old pier span on an incoming tide. (facebook.com)

Prepared for a salt-water swim and the feel of sand between your toes? The beautiful white-sand beach and crystal-clear waters of Tampa Bay are just across the street. The water here is shallow with a sandy bottom, so it is typically a great place to swim with kids, or just float on the smooth waters. Fishermen like to wade out a distance from the shore and cast their lines, while shell-seekers know they are probably to find something special in this comparatively unpopulated part of the beach. The Historic Anna Maria City Pier is a charming site just 200 yards down the beach. (beachrentals.mobi)
There are many places to access the Gulf of Mexico. If you live in Clearwater or North Pinellas you may attempt the Seminole ship Ramp, or Dunedin near Edgewater Park. Boaters enjoy fishing near Anclote Island, and the bridges of Clearwater Beach and Sand Key for snook, red fish, and trout. You may also pick up a fishing charter at the Clearwater Beach Marina. And do not forget offshore fishing in the gulf. It’s one of the best places to catch grouper and king fish. (fishing-florida.com)
