Sturgeon Fishing Report Sacramento Delta

I went work on Friday and it was a zoo with people standing on both sides of the river, due to low water level. I went down stream to find a less crowded spot and managed to land a 10lb hen. It was clean and fought like a 20lb fish. It made 4 or 5 runs on me. I could work her back in and she could see the shore and take off again. So I went out again in the morning and restricted out in a couple hours. Got about a 15lb male and a 10 lb male. The 10 lb male was bright and still had its scales. When I filleted it, it had white meat. I also noticed that it didn’t fight as hard as the hen from Friday night. (scout.com)

The wind laid down day before it was tough but great, I launched late at Paradise point 3:30 Headed straight for the cabin on the left on the levee going out to the major channel tossed on a rattle trap and my friend tossed on a husky jerk and started a troll hooked 5 fish in the 45 min only on the gold husky jerk trolled the mobil home 500 yards and turned hooked all the fish on the turn before the shack, pulled the trolling rigs and drifted the turn with perch and shiner’s nothing for 20 min than bang 5 more fish in less than all 20inch to 30inch nice fish, going for a night run so headed to garlic brothers wind laid down high tide and weeds all over the place couldn’t dip for shad well but was able to get 50 or so some big. At any and operates Spud Point Marina and Mason’s Marina. At Mason’s Marina there’s a gas station that sells gasoline and diesel fuel for cars and trucks and propane for RV’s. I have been told that the County will be closing down the store at Mason’s Marina in the next week or so and will stop selling gas and diesel for cars and trucks. There are hundreds and hundreds of miles of waterways down here that you could literally use up a couple lifetimes exploring and not see half of it. From a fishing standpoint, there is something going on pretty much year-round here. The kings come through in September and October and the place loads up with striped bass in the fall and they hang around all winter till the urge to procreate coaxes them upstream in teh spring. 1st of how fast fishing conditions can change.   A hot bite one day will frequently lead to a cold bite the next.   Not to talk about the fact that in the delta fish are constantly on the move and are most probably miles away by the next day anyway.   Striped Bass, as an example, travel an average of eight miles a day. In 1976, when the 1st edition of Inland Fishes of California was published, author Peter Moyle expressed optimism for the white sturgeon’s future, saying the present managed sport fishery promises to yield uninterrupted returns for many years to come. almost forty years afterward, fisheries biologists are not so sure. Although sturgeon numbers refused steeply in the years after anglers discovered the shrimp bait technique, they seemed to stabilize throughout the 1970s, then, in the 1980s, the numbers started to crater. Reporting for New Roman s Bait & Tackle, Richard Witham said he s been seeing anywhere from 3 to 5 sturgeon a day recently at the shop. The sturgeon bite is on fire all through the Merits Landing area for bank anglers and the complete Freeport area in the major stem for boaters, he said. There have been lots of green sturgeon, over-sized fish and a good mixed bag of everything in between. There are some in the sloughs like Prospect, however not the way they were some weeks ago, they’re back out in the major stem in faster water now. (wonews.com)

The California Wildlife CDFW works to keep the state s white sturgeon population from declining precipitously. Most of that work is estimating the number of fish harvested kept, the harvest rate and population size. Because many sturgeon anglers fail to present their sturgeon fishing report cards and data from report cards is important, new harvest limitations or limitations on the sale of the report cards can be obliged to deal with doubt attributable to uncooperative sturgeon anglers. We had a pair of monsters over 10 pounds today, stated Randy Pringle of the Fishing Instructor Guide Service on September 26. One of the big fish fell for Optima’s Furbit The Frog and the other one grabbed a Optima wake bait. The fishing was just phenomenal today. At one point we had a 3 pounder hooked the Optima wake bait and a fish of about 8 pounds tried to take the bait away from the smaller fish frequently. (fishinreportcom.siteprotect.net)

Fishing on Steamboat Slough was going on for a long, long time!  Got to this link to read about fishing in 1862 at the confluence of Steamboat Slough and Cache Slough with the Sacramento River.   2015 fall fishing may have been the worst anybody in this area of the Delta ever remembers seeing.   few adult salmon seem to have migrated in their natural channels like Steamboat Slough.   Fish scientists have not still completely stated if their experiments to get salmon to go to Cache Slough and Sacramento Ship Channel have worked.
