Fished for stripers below the bridge at Red Bank on May 7 and had stripers on every few minutes, our biggest was most likely 10 pounds. Not quite the same as having a "leaping bright on" but lots of fun on an 8 and 10 weight fly rods. On the way back up-river we came across stripers at one point going crazy from one bank to another, this was a feeding frenzy as we had no difficulty hooking into one. One angler was hauling them in with every cast. A longer season and ownership bound could be a bonus to the communities around the area. DFO guys we met were great, extending the season and limitations should be given serious consideration. (Click here for info)
Now in population of Striped Bass exists only in the Northwest Miramichi River, representing the northern-most self-sustaining population of Striped Bass in North America. The home range of the Miramichi-spawning population extends during the complete southern Gulf of St Lawrence from Percé, Québec to the Margaree River, Nova Scotia. This southern Gulf/Miramichi-spawning population remains at low abundance and the population has refused from a high of 50, 000 spawning fish in 1995 to about 4, 000 throughout 1998 to 2000 Douglas et al 2001 . This population exhibits big yearly fluctuations that are attributed to overfishing and year-class failures caused by adverse environmental conditions Bradford and Chaput 1997 . (stripers247.com)
We’re less than 2 months away from the start of the fishing season for 2016, and patiently waiting for the ice to run and the fishing rules to be declared by DFO. Last numbers for 2015 haven’t been released still, however we do know that returns were much better in 2015 than 2014 and conservation prerequisites were nearly met on both the Northwest and Southwest branches. To preserve the Atlantic salmon for the future, we think the catch and release fishing only policy satisfies that prerequisite and may be continued on Miramichi waters in 2016, but the lodges and clubs are open and excitedly awaiting anglers for the 2016 season. This month s Striped Bass Hotspot is a part of the Stewiacke River, deep in the heart of Nova Scotia that really produces fish early in the season. Stripers move into and through this area in the spring throughout their spawning ritual. There are literally thousands of fish stacked up and days of catching 20+ fish per person are common. Attempt using either live or fake Blood Worms, based on the season, or casting crankbaits or topwaters. One thing to think about; when the Bay of Fundy Tides come rolling in, extreme caution should be taken. The fast current and slippery mud banks may be treacherous. (fishncanada.com)
The retention season for striped bass opens on Monday, May 11 this year and anglers in Pictou County will have extended opportunities available to them this season with both a longer fishing season and a longer period when bass can be retained. A total of 31 days have been added to the fishing season and 7 days have been added to the time when bass can be caught and kept. The fishery for this species was closed some years ago when population numbers dropped to low levels. Thanks to management measures brought in by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans the population has rebounded very well and anglers will be able to take benefit of a season which opened on May 01 and will run till October 31. Taking a look at Quarryville on the major Southwest Miramichi, anglers will have a problem to get their boats to water. Shore anglers can also have a problem as the ice-run some number of weeks ago has left a sheer cliff of ice along both banks above and below the bridge. George Routledge said there were ‘piles of ice on both sides six to 10 feet in height. Anglers will have to clear a spot to get their boats through, so they may need an axes and shovels’. One possible spot is below the bridge where the ice took out three hydro poles. To fix them, the hydro had to clear a path nearly to the river. (giverontheriver.com)
MREAC was involved in Striped bass Morone saxatilis stock and habitat evaluation and management work on the Miramichi River. Support for defending, monitoring and advancing the Striped bass management is especially important as a restricted stretch of the Northwest Miramichi River is important spawning grounds for this fish species. MREAC partners with DFO with other community established groups as well as the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence Coalition on Sustainability to find out the migration rates of juvenile Striped bass out of the Miramichi. The position of the Gulf of St. Lawrence Striped bass population on the COSEWIC list is threatened and under SARA the position is pending public interview . (mreac.org)
