Luckily, the number of fish spawning in Sheep Creek exceeds the stream’s spawning habitat. Sheep Creek is a small stream and there are too many spawning females for the space available in the gravel beds. Late spawners dig their reads, or nests, over the reads of earlier spawners. This dislodges, or covers the eggs already in the gravel and can really decrease the productivity of the stream. But, it offers a window of opportunity. Eggs from the surplus, or redundant spawners may be taken without fear of hurting the Flaming Gorge fishery, particularly since nearly all of the Flaming Gorge kokanee spawn on the shale inside the reservoir. Throughout the early years after their initial stocking, I had the good fortune of figuring out how to find and catch them. My young kids, their grandfather, and I discovered some number of things about kokanee that gave their presence away. Once we realized what we were seeing on our fishfinder, it became comparatively easy to fish at the correct depth and master the art of hooking these soft-mouthed fish. (heraldextra.com)
Troll a tempt with weighted line to reach best depth. Your lead-core line should have 4 to 6 feet of mono-filament leader before the tempt. Trolling speed is slower for salmon than for cutthroat trout. Trolling in S curves will assist differ the speed and depth of your tempt. Smaller spinners and wobblers are best as the kokanee salmon have a smaller mouth than cutthroat or rainbow trout. Silver flashers and shiny silver lures work best. Salmon congregate and feed in schools, and frequently mistake the silver flash for other salmon feeding. When you start to get good strikes, or catch a fish at some depth, make repeated passes over the same area. (ehow.com)

In Utah, kokanee eggs hatch between November and January. The tiny new salmon will use up their 1st weeks of life hiding in the gravel feeding off the remains of their egg yolk bag. After some weeks they’ll emerge from the gravel to feed on plankton. By spring, these youngsters called fingerlings- will be an inch and a half long. Throughout spring runoff the fingerlings are swept downstream till they spill into a lake or reservoir. Now they’ll stay here in the open water for 2-4 years, feeding on zooplankton till they reach maturity. (wildaboututah.org)
The cutthroats from Bear Lake stock have prospered. And, after clean rainbow trout were presented, they too have flourished. In 1996, a four fish bound was presented. Only one may be over 18 inches. And fishermen were asked though not obliged to release all cutthroat trout. The intention was to let the cutthroats grow big enough in enough numbers to control the chub population.
