It happened again in 2003 when Glen Boyd was trout fishing on Stonecoal and spotted a big fish cruising the shoreline. Heaving the biggest tempt in his box, a 4-inch Mepps spinner, toward the fish, he surely was not prepared for what struck the other end of his line. A 52. 7-inch muskie engulfed the spinner and towed Boyd’s ship around the lake for the next 45 minutes. After keeping the fish new in his bathtub all night, the huge muskie was verified the next day as West Virginia’s new length record, breaking an ancient mark established from Lester Hayes’ Elk River giant. I have fished Stonewall for many years. The lake since 2010 hasn’t made the numbers or the quality size that it did before. My friends and I fish there weekly and it is hard to put 3 dinks in the ship some days. I think not only the white bass but the big musky population have influenced black bass size and numbers. I think bass 12 to 15 inches need weeded out 1st before 18 inches and over. But also I think tournaments have to be restricted on the lake for now to see if the changes help. We call it ‘optimizing your time on the water. ‘ As you may guess, many of the factors that matter are reliant on place. I am in the procedure now of creating an broad model that’s place agnostic, to see if certain weather conditions, time, bait type etc. Have an affect that’s important on own. Spring is gradually approaching and some fish species are preparing to spawn as the water warms in the next few weeks. Crappie will be showing up on brush piles, flooded timber or downed trees where they’ll spawn. They’ll hit small minnows or doll flies. Bass can be caught off rocky points and around downed trees using live bait and artificials like spinnerbaits and plastic worms. Anglers should look for points that have some cover like stumps, logs or weed beds. Attempt slow rolling a spinnerbait, bumping off the stumps. Some hybrid striped bass can be caught using big minnows. Anglers should attempt spots like the mouth of Indian Creek or up the Bluestone Arm as these fish, although usually infertile, still make mock spawning runs upstream. (theet.com)

Dr. Mark Cucuzzella was a runner his complete life, however when injuries plagued him during high school and college, he searched for a remedy other than his doctor’s advice of ‘do not run. ‘ He started to shave the heels off of his own running sneakers, becoming a true pioneer in the minimalist running motion. At around 11:30 I fired up the motor on the ship and let the 115 hp Mercury take us across the lake in search of Musky. Thanks to Ed Metheny, who attends the BVC, I have been smitten with the Musky Bug. At 11:45 I rigged up one of my Musky rods for Dad and one for myself and we started to troll up a mouth of a creek. We never made it 100 yards when my reel started singing that sweet song that all Musky fisherman live for. After a brief fight my Dad dipped the net in the water and we had our 1st Musky of the day in the ship. The fish calculated 40 inches. We were as happy as a butcher’s dog!
