I’d bet that more anglers have hooked their 1st steelhead by feeding crankbaits downstream than by any other technique. There have been some upgrades in the game, but. The basics involve a ship anchored above a deep hole and a crankbait slipped into the current and allowed to work at the head of the drop-off. Well you didn’t state what type fishing you were going to do, trolling, casting, back trolling or drift fishing. My choice could be the Abu 6500C, Penn 220GTO or 230GTO, US Super Caster 1000 Pro like the faster retrieve rate I could use braided super line on all of these reels. You need line capacity for Salmon. All 3 reels are able of casting pretty well with 200 plus yards of line. For trolling the Penn 220/230GTO shines above the other 2 hands down. I could have to give casting to the 1000 Supercaster Pro as it’s smooth as without an eye guide it goes off the spool. As with many methods, the 1st question is if to go with a spinning or baitcasting setup; both have their benefits. When using very light tackle, like 1/8 oz to oz floats, a spinning rod offers easier casting for most anglers. The benefit of baitcasting reels, but, is that they may be left in casting mode so that line will flow easily from the spool and let the drift to continue. Spinning reels let for this also but when you see a bobber down! and have to disengage the free spool it’s more cumbersome to flip the bail over, particularly once a steelhead draws the line tight. I favor baitcasting setups nearly entirely for personal use, however use spinning setups when taking out novice anglers or kids who may have difficulty mastering a cast with a levelwind baitcaster.
