B-Run Steelhead in our area finally all stem from the Clearwater River system. Idaho State hatchery efforts have presented B-Run Steelhead to the Salmon River also. B-Run fish are big and stay at sea an extra year and grow upwards to 20 lbs. Good genetics and an extra year of growth make these B-Run fish the biggest of Steelhead on the Columbia River system. With an extra year of growth comes a change of approach in comparison to their younger A-Run brothers and sisters. B-Run Steelhead tend to be less hungry in the way they act. Panfish action reservoirs is remaining. Find a school of active crappies and it is not strange to go away with 50 of the light-flavored little fish for a day’s efforts. Small leadhead adorned with red and white plastic skirts or tube bodies are most efficient, however other color mix also work. After fishing for a couple of hours Tom landed the 2 beauties shown in the photo above and Mike and Cam both stated have Steelhead on the line but unable to land them. The 2 hatchery fish above are a nice representation of a common 1 salt Buck the top darker fish and a Hen the bright lower fish . The Buck was 26+ inches in length and the Hen was in the 24 inch range. Both of these Steelhead were caught nymphing with a big heavy Salmon Fly nymph. Tom chose to use this big heavy fly because the goes were a little heavy and he required to get down into fishing zone fast. it’s all about presentation and the most important thing is to get that fly down fast because the drifts are short. Kokanee anglers are starting to have more success in this early part of the season. Most fishing effort is still concentrated on the south end of the lake, where some anglers are catching daily limitations of kokanee, and some holdover trout. Some kokanee have been in the 12-inch to 16-inch range. Boaters should be aware that ship docks at the south and north ends of the lake are now out of the season. With a strong wind launching and landing boats may hazardous, be aware of weather conditions before planning a trip. (lagrandeobserver.com)

Fishery crews are feverishly gathering the anadromous fish at the trap at the bottom of 330-foot Hells Canyon Dam and trucking them 23 miles upstream to the Idaho Power s Oxbow Hatchery. The 5- to 7-pound and bigger fish are calculated, and their gender is determined. Technicians look to see if the fish have a full top rear fin. It s the adipose fin and indicates it s a wild fish. Wild fish are returned to the Snake River with any fall chinook that get into the trap. Some fish also may have coded wire tags that tell the hatchery of origin. (magicvalley.com)

This part of river is one of our personal favorites. Hells Canyon Sport Fishing is one of only a couple Idaho Powerboat outfitters licensed to fish this awesome part of the Clearwater River for Spring Chinook Salmon. This part is recognized to produce lots of Wild Spring Chinook and some of the bigger fish caught yearly are taken from this part of the river. This is another Passing Through part of the river. Most of the fish moving up through this part are headed to the upper head waters of the Clearwater like the Locsa R, Selway R. And South fork of the Clearwater. Though the methods used by the Guides at Hells Canyon Sport Fishing are the same as we use in the lower river sections lots of the water we fish is much smaller and frequently shallower. The Buoy 10 season remains productive but it wouldn t be Buoy 10 if the fishing didn t have its hit or miss days. Anglers were disappointed about Thursday s catches but some trollers landed on them. Biologists had to pull the plug on all Chinook retention from Buoy 10 to Tongue Point starting Saturday, August 29th. The any chinook season will remain open, at least for now, above Tongue Point through September seventh. Coho are starting to show in better numbers and action for coho should ramp up into Labor Day. Tongue Point was good early in the week but action has since tapered as the tidal influx has increased. (steelheadu.com)
