Over at to Jeremy this week and he said that there’s still a pretty good herring bite taking place in the Harbor. The fish are showing a slight preference for smaller Sabiki rigs he suggested size 6 hooks for your best shot. Otherwise the striper bite in the Housy is still a viable choice but the bite is tough. The fish are schooled up in the deeper water as projected in February an this is when they begin to get a sever case of lock-jaw. On occasion a warm snap like the one predicted for this week can trigger them into feeding so this may be a good call if you are wanting to wet a line in the next few days. (thefisherman.com)
Me, my wife and 3 teenage kids went on the 7pm Night Bass/Blues fishing trip. We looked forward to this for a while, however we were disappointed! We came home with 0 fish. I called ahead to learn if the night or morning/day trip could make a difference. The woman I spoke with indicated that didn't really matter. Well. It did! Out of about 20 people, the only fish I saw caught were an eel, robin fish, 1 fluke and 1 small bluefish. We went to one spot and stayed there all night. I've since discovered that other fishing charters will go to different places to find fish. Towards the end of the trip that's when most of the crew told that the morning/day trip is more better. Part of is that one is after a sizable quarry, fish that weigh 15, 30, or 50 pounds and more. The 15-pounders are more common, however really big fish are not strange. The Super Spray II, accessible at 516 223-7418 or 223-2507, out of Freeport stated earlier this week that in recent days many fish weighing from 30 to 45 pounds were caught. There are two other Freeport cod boats: Starstream II 516 379-2753 and the Miss Freeport 516 221-1355. As at the other Long Island places, these boats leave before sunrise and return at sundown. One should check the exact sailing times, which are typically between 5 and 6. (nytimes.com)

I have been fishing with this group for many years. Their last addition to the fleet is The Starstream VIII vessel. I have been lucky to join them on many trips 60 to 80 miles offshore. There are few opportunities in the tri- state area to take pleasure in deep water fishing without owning a 6 figure ship, or paying an huge fee for a private charter. The offshore trips are "open ship" opportunities that cost under $170 for a 20 hour trip. The crew is quite attentive, insuring you have the best equipment and have the technique down to maximize your fishing experience. The cabin of the ship is huge and heated. (tripadvisor.co.nz)
My 1st go to bait for cod is conch. This term can be used to loosely describe virtually any big sea snail or whelk that turns up in the bait can with the day s cargo of skimmer. Crack open the tough shell and you ll find a leather-like tube of flesh that may be sliced lengthwise into two long pieces. Cut off the hard-skinned foot and carve each slice so that it’s one-half-inch thick. Impale the conch or snail strip on the hook just as you could a part of skimmer clam. Because conch and snail are tough, make certain the hook point and barb protrude completely through the bait. Leave a trail end of at least two inches hanging down from the hook s bend and, if you like, add a stringy band of skimmer to top it all off. (outdoortom.com)

The cod fishing continued to be steady, with most cod in the 5- to 8-pound class and common pool fish ranging between 10 and 15 pounds. in general, the ling fishing was good during the winter season, with many ling weighing in between 3 and 5 pounds. The cod fishing remains slower than last year, however the pollock and ling fishing was better. The best ling fishing continued to be in New York Bight, however they have been stated by all cod boats. some pollock have been blended in with the cod. The best pollock fishing was stated on the boats running out of Moriches Inlet. The best fishing for all species was on the wrecks in 120 feet of water and deeper. (outdoornews.com)
