On our way upstream earlier in the morning, I noticed a deep trough on the inside of the river that spanned thirty yards across by one hundred yards long. Welcome to Texas Council was made this fall, as there was a strong want to unify our state. Texas was divided with the Northern clubs belonging to the Southern Council and the rest of the state belonging to the Gulf Coast Council. A unified state will be useful in so many ways. On November the 26th, the Federation of Fly Fishers accepted the formation of the Texas Council. Holschlag and his wife, Lynn, picked me up, and we accessed the Root River just outside of Chesterfield, Minn. As indicated by Minnesota biologists, the Root River supports roughly 55 miles of remaining smallmouth habitat from Chesterfield to Rushford. Keep one eye on the shore and you re probably to see deer, beaver, muskrat, groundhog, and mink. Keep the other eye on the sky and you may see blue and green herons, bald eagles, red-rear hawks, osprey, kingfishers, all types of ducks and geese and the sporadic great horned owl. It can mean some of the most unforgettable conventional dry fly fishing of the complete year for big smallmouth. The White s coming off the upper Mississippi north of the Twin Cities seem to be about a #12 or #14. This is just a big Light Cahill and a PMD will work frequently in a pinch.
