Smallmouth Fishing At Hinton W. V

As you you’ll sometimes meet Class I rapids and riffles. None of these will probably be a problem, however the Class II Brooks Ledge may because difficulty. Some local sportsmen have called Brooks Ledge as ‘Brooks Falls II, ‘ a sharp drop does happen on the river left side of the fast. But, boaters can avoid this fast by portaging along Brooks Island or with drifting along the river right bank. If you’re in a canoe, johnboat or alike craft, I recommend portaging. About 100 yards below Brooks Ledge, an easy Class I riffle seems in the form of a ledge. This drop in the stream bottom is fun to run. (gameandfishmag.com)

If you really want to catch some big smallmouth I recommend floating this part throughout the winter time because you will catch some smallmouth in the 5-7 pound range. You won’t catch lots of fish on the New River throughout the winter time, however the one’s you catch will be bigger. Use caution floating the New River in the wintertime because the water will be up and flowing pretty fast. I’d recommend using a flat bottom aluminum ship with a trolley motor and anchor throughout the winter months so you may be able to stop if you have to also as maneuver your ship through the swift water. Donna said places she suggests is on the New River at the base of the dam or the catwalk . This place is great for the wade fisherman or bank fisherman. You’ll have to know the number of gates open on the dam before fishing this area. Roughly 2 1/2 gates or fewer are favored for fishing from the catwalk. You may be able to catch bass, catfish, muskie, bluegill/rock bass and carp from this area. Sometimes you’ll catch a trout that has washed through the dam from the stocking of the Bluestone River at Pipestem State Park. Walking the cat walk at the base of Bluestone requires caution and fishermen should generally wear a life jacket PFD while doing this. (register-herald.com)

I fished the New River when I was at VT typically near McCoy drive up the railroad tracks by Big Falls Road . As I recall, there’s a camp ground near Big Falls . I am not sure exactly where other campgrounds are located along the New but we’d be open to other ideas if the fishing is better in other regions. Now I am not sure if we’d be floating or wading, however both are possibilites. Any ideas? (bassresource.com)

Bluestone State Park has many hiking trails meandering their way through and connecting to adjoining parks. Many of the trails supply panoramic views of the rugged, hilly, terrain and Bluestone’s scenic lake. The Bluestone Turnpike Trail shadows the Bluestone River to Pipestem Resort State Park. This moderately easy hike eight-mile hike along the slow moving river is an excellent way to use up a day. Hinton is a really neat town. The famous Hinton Dairy Queen has a dining room with fireplace sitting out over the New River and they serve steak. The DQ made it into Noah Adams’ book Far Appalachia. The Bluestone and New Rivers offer stellar views, beauty and great smallmouth fishing. I have floated from Sandstone Falls to Meadow Bridge before and it’s more beautiful from the river. The museum in Hinton has some really cool stuff on the old RR days as well as a giant model of John Henry vs. The steam engine scene. The New River National River is one of the most underappreciated National Parks in WV. (geocaching.com)
