The Nolichucky River offers diverse fishing and some beautiful scenery all inside an hour of Asheville. Center Tennessee smallmouth angler William ‘friend’ Dodson spends as much time on the Duck and Buffalo rivers as I do on the eastern waters. He says float trips are the best way to talk to the Duck River. There’s some decent fishing above the Riverside Dam that may be accessed by putting in at the ramp above the dam and hitting the shoals about six miles upstream. But Dodson says the best smallmouth fishing, by far, is below the dam. Good public access may be found by canoe or jet ship float from the ramp in downtown Columbia at the dam to the ramp at Chickasaw Trace off Highway 7. That is about a three-quarter-day float. The French Broad is the biggest and most productive smallmouth bass and musky river in North Carolina. Davy Crockett is a shallow, 383-acre reservoir located inside Greene County in east Tennessee. The Nolichucky Dam was built by the Tennessee Eastern Electric Company in 1913 and impounds roughly six miles of the Nolichucky River. The reservoir was maintained by the Tennessee Valley Authority TVA since 1945. TVA suspended hydroelectric power production in 1972 caused by extreme siltation inside the reservoir. (tnfish.org)
