The Nolichucky River offers diverse fishing and some beautiful scenery all inside an hour of Asheville. The gorge part fishes great and is simpler to move around on when water level is under 1800 cfs. Like any gorge, the to get around may be tough on foot but well worth the hike. This part has class IV rapids with lots of fishy holes, so bring a 9′ 5 or 6 wt. Rod, heavy flies and respect for the white water. (curtiswrightoutfitters.com)
Center Tennessee smallmouth angler William ‘friend’ Dodson spends as much time on the Duck and Buffalo rivers as I do on the eastern waters. He says float trips are the best way to talk to the Duck River. There’s some decent fishing above the Riverside Dam that may be accessed by putting in at the ramp above the dam and hitting the shoals about six miles upstream. But Dodson says the best smallmouth fishing, by far, is below the dam. Good public access may be found by canoe or jet ship float from the ramp in downtown Columbia at the dam to the ramp at Chickasaw Trace off Highway 7. That is about a three-quarter-day float. Either way, the fishing may be good and the float a real education in smallmouth. Guides Theo Copland pronounced deal-land and his same twin, Hayden, have been fishing these Southern Appalachian rivers for almost 20 years and they have lots of great info to impart — both on technique and tackle. Arguments over the best flies for smallmouth have produced a sub-genre of fly-tying literature and the Coplands are happy to add their views. They may not see eye-to-eye on flies, however there’s unanimity on technique. (articles.mcall.com)
Are all great free stone resources. The best time to get on one of these rivers is late in the spring or early summer before water levels have dropped too significantly to permit navigation. While small mouth are our main concentrate on all of these float trips, the beauty of a temperate water float is that you never really know what you’re going to catch. We usually catch carp, gar, hybrid bass, white bass, striped bass, freshwater drum, walleye, and cat fish on our floats. Don t forget your swimsuit. (3riversangler.com)

, located in eastern TN, is regarded as one of the best trout fishing places in the South. Behind over 2000 fish per mile, it looks fitting that the Cherokee translation for Watauga is "river of plenty". This 16 mile tailwater receives daily releases of cold water from Wilbur dam creating an optimum environment for aquatic bug life and year round fishing. Prime dry fly and sight fishing occurs from spring, all the way in to the heat of summer when other streams get low and unproductive. The best part of river is the TVA chosen "Quality Trout" zone which starts at the lodge and meanders 2. (wataugariverlodge.com)
