BFL tournaments have boater and co-angler sides and of the total 274 BFL anglers on Skiatook Saturday only 112 brought a fish to the scales and 72 of those had just one fish. Beau Govreau of Cedar Hill, Missouri won second place and big-bass in the co-angler division by catching a single 5-pound, 5-oz bass. The big bass and the placement netted him $1, 495. Skiatook Lake was selected to partake in the National Federal Demonstration Lakes program. The Corps of Engineers encouraged recreational development by non-federal partners and worked to expedite the lease procedure. The Skiatook Lakes Demonstration project is part of the Corps of Engineers’ answer to President Clinton’s blue-band panel appointed in 1998 to conduct the national recreation study. We focused our attention on fishing the shad ‘carpet’ looking at our sonar. At the edges of the shad ‘carpet’ in the river channels we could find blue catfish feeding. Using our Navionics lake maps and sonar on our Lowrance HDS 12, we could see little yellow blunt arches that we interpret as blue catfish hanging on the edges of the channels gorging on shad. Blue catfish use the edges of channels to trap their food. I like to think about it as if we were playing tag in a racquetball court. The tagger could use the wall as a way to corner the opponent and tag them. Catfish, well fish overall, use ledges and drop offs much the same way to catch their food. (lancesguideservice.com)

When the Skiatook Lake dam was closed, the present bass in the feeder streams also included spotted bass — and therein lied part of the problem. The fishery was developing well, and field studies showed that Skiatook Lake could also support a smallmouth bass population. The habitat was there, so was the food, as indicated by Long. And in they went in 1990. But unbeknownst to biologists at the time, a nuisance population of spotted bass was already developing. In four years time, the lake went from being dominated by largemouth bass, to being overrun by tiny, nuisance spotted bass. Skiatook Dam for construction by the Flood Control Act accepted October 23, 1962. It’s one of five projects in the Bird Creek Basin plan suggested to meet the complete water resources needs of the area. The damsite is on Hominy Creek about 5 miles west of Skiatook in Osage County, Oklahoma. It’s 14. 3 miles above the connection of Hominy Creek and Bird Creek. The project serves the reasons of flood control, water quality, water supply, recreation, and fish and wildlife management. The total cost of the project was roughly $120 million. Starting to move into fall patterns. Fish spread out but starting to move back into shallower water. Lots of small smallmouth being caught in the major lake area South of highway 20 bridge. Some schooling fish feeding on top being stated. Some big smallmouth weighed in over the last couple weeks caught on top water baits. 5. 9lb caught 2 weeks ago. Big mouth should start to move around some of the flooded bushes and into the creeks as water temp. Falls. The next couple of months will be some of the best fishing of the year.
