Captain John of Shinnecock Inlet for over 40 years.   he’s specific in offshore fishing for the last 30.   His son Brian Hyland has worked in marinas and on boats since he was 12 years old.   He started fishing at age four and was hooked since.   Captain John took his son on his 1st offshore trip at age nine and since they have been aiming at all pelagic species. Over at Fisherman’s World I spoke to Jeremy this week and he said that there’s still a pretty good herring bite taking place in the Harbor. The fish are showing a slight preference for smaller Sabiki rigs he suggested size 6 hooks for your best shot. Otherwise the striper bite in the Housy is still a viable choice but the bite is tough. The fish are schooled up in the deeper water as projected in February an this is when they begin to get a sever case of lock-jaw. On occasion a warm snap like the one predicted for this week can trigger them into feeding so this may be a good call if you are wanting to wet a line in the next few days. (thefisherman.com)

Firstly I'm sorry about not to get back to you sooner as I've been working. also, we left 20 mins early the other day when you came to the ship because we thought all reservations were checked in. My crew had the roster and checked everyone in by reservation except I person that had been sleeping in Cabin. They tried to wake him up to no avail and they expected that the 1 left over buyer was "Felton Winters". As we got more offshore the buyer awoke and we then knew it wasn't you. It is canyons came to life and the inshore bite is unbelievable. The Tails Block Canyon is the place to good with all different species of Tuna, Mahi, Blue and White Marlin being captured on a regular base. now the Combria about 25 miles offshore bite has both Bluefin and Yellowfin blended in, with good numbers of both coming over the rails. Bluefins are ranging from 50 to 90 pounds and the Yellowfins are around 40 pounds. Sharks are biting only a couple of miles of the beach and you have a honest shot at catching and releasing many fish daily. Fluke fishing looks to be fading out as they move out to deeper water now that the hot weather is hitting us, however we can look forward to awesome scup action and the opening of sea bass in the center of next week. You may be able to certainly still pull keeper summer flounder from the water, however you have to be diligent and patient. Fish a bit deeper than you may have in past weeks, and look for transition regions and drop-offs. Porgy and sea bass are hanging out together in comparatively shallow water over most hard structure around the Island, and though you’ll still have to throw back any sea bass you catch, it’s a good time to hone in your equipment to have it prepared for next week. Bill was useful over at Jamesport Bait and Tackle, with a in depth report. Offshore of Shinnecock Inlet the bluefin bite is still on in 130 feet of water, fish are taken on the troll. Two miles east of the dip yellowfin, bluefin and lots of mahi mahi are taken. Back in the bay, porgies are active around buoys 20, 22 and 30. Blues have been blitzing at the end of the flood in the neighborhood between Robin’s Island and Nassau Point. Fluke are caught in 40-60 feet of water around Gardiner’s Island. Plum Gut is producing some big porgies on the slack tides. Bass are hitting buck tails on the outgoing tide in the Gut also, in the Sound fluke are hitting in regions around Roanoke Shoal and the pipeline and porgies are caught from Mattituck Inlet all the way to Horton’s Point. Note that the ship sails 3 times a day on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Mondays 7 to 11 A. M, 12 to 4 P. M and striper fishing from 5 to 9 P. M. The evening bass trips require reservations. As for the rest of the week, times differ based on the captain’s choice of species. Also, the Hampton Lady will run it’s 1st Shark trip with a maximum of 10 anglers on June 16th and you’ll have to make reservations. The two fish at 16 inches or greater for shore-established anglers are the rules on IBSP – anglers can’t decide to keep 2 fish at 16 inches or 5 fish at 18 inches, it’s 2 fish at 16 inches only. Anglers that possess summer flounder harvested at IBSP may harvest summer flounder outside IBSP provided they abide to the 18-inch size bound and 5 fish ownership bound related to all other waters as an example, if 1 fish is harvested at IBSP, 4 fish 18 inches or greater can be harvested in waters outside of IBSP . As we head west along Staten Islands shore we’re in the Raritan bays two deep channels. Both the Ambrose chanell and the Raritan Reach have an average depth of roughly 45 feet and drop to 70 feet in some regions. Under the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge is the deepest point in the Hudson Drainage sysyem. This area is the Entrance to New york City Harbor that was at one time guarded by Fort Hamilton on the Brooklyn side and Fort Wadsworth on the Staten island side. The Fort wadsworth area is managed by gateway national recreation area and a permit is needed to fish from dusk tilll sunrise. The island beaches are bathing beaches that lack structure and access for the most part but the public beach at south beach has a fishing pier, bogs, old pilings, slight man made groins and some appreciable rock formations that take some walking and reconosance work for the hard core surfcaster.
