From I-81: Take exit 217 for Mint Springs/ Stuarts Draft and continue east on State path 654 SR to the stoplight. Turn left onto US 340 and continue into Stuarts Draft. Off US 340, take a right onto SR 662 at the 3rd stop light. Continue on SR 662 to the stoplight at intersection with SR 608. Continue straight ahead on what is SR 608 Howardsville Turnpike following the major road as it curves left and continue to the stop sign at the intersection with SR 610 Mount Torry Road . The upper and center portions of the James River flow through our region in Nelson County VA and contain some of the best fishing in the Virginia area. Offering a large range of fishing opportunities in many different settings, the James River Fishing in Virginia is some of the most distinctive and diverse. Smallmouth bass are the dominant fish in the river, but spotted largemouth bass have also been usually caught. The James River is home to some other varieties of game fish like channel catfish, flathead catfish, and some varieties of sunfish like redbreast, bluegill and rock bass. Fairy Stone can be a small impoundment, however the fishing is good, with bass averaging 15 inches in length, as indicated by Dan Wilson, VDGIF fisheries biologist. Some bass have been sampled that calculated over 20 inches, so there’s some possible for a rod-bending ‘hawg. ‘ Anglers visiting the lake will find quality bass in its waters. Wilson noted that there aren’t shad in the lake and sunfish supply forage for the bass. The fact that the bluegill population has increased indicates that the bass population isn’t overcrowded. Many of you have seen the pictures we have been posting here of big, beautiful, and healthy trout that have been caught in the Delayed Harvest area of South River. We have put together a plan to change the rules on this part of the river to Catch and Release Fly Fishing Only to give Virginia fly fishers a true destination fishery. Sherando Lake Recreation Area, located near Waynesboro, VA, is inside an easy half-day drive from Washington DC, the Tidewater Virginia area and Virginia Beach.   The recreation area offers many actions for the visitors and volunteers to take pleasure in:  a 25 acre lake for swimming with a sand beach, fishing, and small boating; a 7 acre lake for fishing; stocked  trout waters; 65 family campsites; big group camping area; hiking trails; and picnic buildings.    The Blue Ridge Parkway is inside 5 miles and the Shenandoah National Park is only 20 minutes away. This park has over 500 miles of trails, as well as 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Maps and info are available at entrance points to the park. Entrance costs $10-15 per car based on the season or $5 per person on foot. Best to purchase an yearly pass for $30, which acknowledges your carload or your family on foot. Reservations for selected worked on sites, Morris Hill, Bolar Mountain, and Trout Pond campgrounds, can be made by calling the National Recreation Reservation System at 800-280-CAMP 2267 . Group sites for the Elizabeth Furnace area can be reserved by using the reservation system. By 1938, most big and small game had been almost wiped out caused by over-harvesting and habitat destruction. That year, the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries and the National Forests in Virginia entered into the 1st cooperative agreement of its type in the nation. Under this agreement, the two agencies could work closely together to restore wildlife habitat and begin the procedure of rebuilding huntable game populations on National Forest land. In the late 1800’s industrialist George Washington Vanderbilt, while building his great Biltmore Estate in Asheville, bought Mount Pisgah and thousands of bordering acres for a private hunting retreat for family and friends. The close 16-mile Shut-In Trail a National Recreation Trail is part of a longer path that Vanderbilt first produced for his hunting parties. Today the area adjoining the Parkway is part of the Pisgah National Forest and is still playing host to nature fans.
