Years ago, when I was throwing a deep-diving crankbait and catching so many fish, said Cable, who once used a crankbait to win a spring team tournament on Harris with 10 bass that pushed the 60-pound mark — not long before Dennis Reedy of Sanford and his partner won another tournament with a gargantuan 10-fish, 72-pound catch. It s good to take a look for some of those fish; I wouldn t discount that bite. I look for it when I go, despite of how good the shallow bite is. Coming unglued: To compete with a good bunch of anglers you must be over your game. Possessing knowledge or skill isn t enough. You must be sharp psychologically and physically. For this event I physically just wasn t there. For four out of the last seven days leading up to today I was excavating a 20 x 25 7 deep area for a concrete pad. Sore shoulders, arms, elbows and split skin on thumbs and some fingertips were a hindrance to casting and gripping a reel. Too much shoveling joint with degenerative knee cartilage didn t feel great lightly pedaling the Mariner. Fish may anywhere now. Went out last Sunday and it was a mad house but that’s to be projected for Labor Day weekend. Mornings are my favorite up til noon. Fish topwater early and I have had luck with cranks, shakey head and trigged 10 inch worms. Watch for regions around points they’re long and slender and you may be able to go for 15ft to a foot quickly. Other than that no big issues with stumps and floating logs. I love that place but it may be frustrating at times, looks like its generally feast or famon for me but I can generally manage to catch one. It was taking 30+ pounds to win the Wednesday night tournaments with the locals, so there are some really good fish in there but its not as easy to catch them as some make it seem. What a weekend at Shearon Harris. Eight teams were greeted with a chilly breeze this saturday morning. Most of the lake was clear and the water temp was from 57- 58 degrees in the major lake and 60-62 degrees in the cuts. Fish were starting to move up in the grass but were still real finicky. Brian West and Ronnie Hatem bested the field with 20. 01 lbs with a monster big fish of 7. 82 and brought home first place and big fish. Awesome job guys. After spending recovering from the flu, I’m itching to go fishing. With temperatures forecasted to hit the mid 60 s Sunday there s no way I won t be on a lake someplace. That’s if our center child and oldest daughter Claire, who s 29, can either go ahead and have her baby Saturday or hold off till at least Monday. Her due date is this Sunday the eighth, so it may happen any time now. If baby Vincent can just sit tight literally for some more days this may be my 1st fishing trip in nearly a month. Throughout the 1st two years, all four types of structures were holding more fish than the control sites, and all were holding about the same amount of fish. But, by the 3rd year, all three fake structures held more fish than the Christmas trees, which by this time, had lost all of their needles and were nothing more than trunks and some big branches. We also found that by the 3rd year of the study, the “Georgia” attractor, a structure consisting of PVC pipes and corrugated plastic pipes, was holding more fish than any of the other three structures. Throughout the late summer, big bass at Harris are usually found on ledges and deep major lake points. They cruise these regions in big schools following baitfish. The bass range in depths from 10 to 30 feet based on recent weather, moon phase, and the thermocline. The weather has the strongest effect on the depth the bass stage. as an example, if there was a strong cooling trend the bass are probably to be atop the ledges and points feeding. If the weather was unusually hot, bass will usually remain lethargic and stage on the edges of the drop-offs where the lower level of the thermocline is located. (coastalanglermag.com)
