And yet Tony then hooked a really nice snapper close to 10 lbs in the old money which he carefully released. Then after trying some different spots we came in close to shore over a reef. I was halfway through telling Tony that I didn t have the courage to use a jitterbig here due to reef when he sat screw upright and his line started screaming off the reel, this was a big snapper so I pulled in the sea anchors, this fish which had 50 metres of braid out by now, so I started up the ship and we followed it. I was a bit worried about the state of Tonys braid but he’s an experienced angler and stayed calm and smoothly lifted the Rod and gained line when he could. (softbaitchamps.co.nz)
A stunning day for fishing tomorrow morning! Wind down to 5 kts, big incoming morning tide, and some hungry fish waiting out there for you. Some great fish been caught around the Ahaaha Rocks. Set your self up in about 18-20m just on the edge of the kelp, drifting nice whole Jack Mack s back to the rock. The bigger bait will keep the reef fish and smaller pickers at bay and with any luck have your reel screaming on the fish of the day. Drifting out deeper at the 40-43m mark due North of Onetangi Waiheke is producing Snapps around 50cm$. (facebook.com)
There’s few to know the Hauraki Gulf better than Eric Morman. Eric was fishing the Gulf for over 50 years and knows it like the back of his hand. The inventor of “deadly jigging lures”, Eric’s recent CD is literally a goldmine of info and gives GPS marks for many of his favourite spots in and around the gulf with details of how to fish them. Maps, colour-coded for depth, pinpoint each GPS mark and also show tidal goes so it’s all the info you need. (fishing.net.nz)
In spite of the promising start the rest of the snapper population was in no hurry to be caught. The building Sou-wester was doing its best to spoil our fun but both the skipper and ship were well prepared to outsmart the conditions. A second drogue was deployed while Captain Mayhem brought out a bag of squid and a bottle of Secret Sauce to level the odds. By threading a small sliver of squid and applying a smattering of Secret Sauce to our slow-jig hooks all on board soon had some new fillets waiting on ice. (nzfishingworld.co.nz)
You have to use a tempt that’s nice to snapper and won’t scare them away. Lures that work especially well include: Shimano’s awesome Lucanus and Bottom Ship lures; any kind of inchiku jig; and my favourite, a 4-oz Cyclops rigged with a paddle-tailed Zman soft-plastic. All these lures look nice when falling through the water column towards the school of snapper down below, so are frequently taken mid-descent, also as after reaching the bottom. But, deadly although they can be, we’ve found that by adding scent gel to them they’re better still – which I honestly didn’t think was possible. (stuff.co.nz)

In the summer of 2011, for Auckland I think this important watershed was achieved for some local fly fishers. This isn’t to say there wasn’t last swoffing – Saltfly Sundays charters and lonely ‘secret squirrel’ persons, however I mean a wider grass roots realization and particularly land established exploration, discoveries and recognition that a dependable and productive fishery exists. That means that for anybody in city suburbs you were possibly no more than 10-15 minutes from good fishing opportunities that could accommodate low to hide tides, spanning shelly beaches or oyster covered rocks, open water or mangrove settings.
