. The part of the harbour I’m moored in, is only 3 miles from Brighton City Centre and the town of Shoreham-by-Sea is somewhat more to the west along the river Adur and is nearer to Worthing Town Centre. My major aim is to make your trip enjoyable, safe, easy and productive. The general range we cover, runs from as far east as Eastbourne and as far west to Selsea. On the odd occasion, we have popped over to the port of Fecamp in France. Throughout the early wreck fishing season, trips of 30 miles or so into the channel aren’t strange. This is done to hunt down the big Pollock that inhabit the wrecks throughout that time of the year. (sussexfishing.co.uk)

The inability to change loads of positive bream bites into hooked fish is indicative of reacting too quickly. George Bell and Willie Lyall were enduring those frustrations so frequently suffered by rookie breamers, however Dickie was on hand with good advice which quickly saw them tuned into to the technique. Chris Pucher and Gordon Lyall made it look easy, banging out bream after hyperactive bream. Chris has decades of Littlehampton breaming under his belt, and has experienced both the highs and lows. Like Dickie, he well remembers the continuous bream action of the old days and how easy it was to fill the ship with fish if you were of a mind. (planetseafishing.com)

Visitors and locals alike enjoy walking alongside the river, taking in the beautiful views and watching the boats sail by. Dudley Stone was the winner of the BCC’s 1st boatman’s plaque with a season’s catch of seven and three quarter tons of conger. Trust and Passmore then took a stranglehold and won three consecutive years with a 27 ton score. These catches happened years before the wrecks were commercially fished and anglers had a free run. With a apparently endless supply of conger and ling conservation simply did not enter any of the players heads. (britishcongerclub.org.uk)
In conclusion, both of the big fish outlets at Littlehampton showed their concerns for the current state of the business. it’s sad to see local fishermen having to risk their lives going to sea in inclement weather to catch fish. We can buy fish from the fishermen I can see each day moored across the water. What we now buy is little compared with fish we have to import from other ports. It amazes me how some have managed to survive. They’re a hardy bunch. I attempt to explain as frequently as I can to my customers the problems this business is going through. The business generally gets a national talk about when a fisherman is lost at sea, however there’s little about the conditions they now have to work in, said Jay Hunter. (fishingnews.co.uk)
A human settlement at Littlehampton may be traced back to prehistoric and Roman times, while it seems in the Domesday Book of 1086 as the small hamlet of Hantone. The settlement is believed to have been a fishing community around this time, coming out on a French map in around 1100 as Hanton. The settlement is then believed to have been given to the Abbey of St Martin de Seez in Normandy, who owned Littlehampton till around 1400. The area then passed back to the ownership of successive Earls of Arundel and Dukes of Norfolk, whose successors still live in Arundel today. Littlehampton started to develop as a port consequently of constant silting of the River Arun, possibly leading to the prefix of Little being added to Hampton to distinguish it from the bigger Southampton more along the coast. Management of the actions and maintenance of the canal is the responsibility of Chichester Ship Canal Trust, which leases the canal from West Sussex County Council. The Canal Trust is a registered charity with around 800 members. A big aim of the Trust is to preserve, maintain and improve the navigation between Chichester and the harbour – a historical monument to the transport revolution in Britain in the 19th century.
