This long, well recognized for both striped bass fishing and as a place to attempt for the elusive sea-run trout. Parts of the marsh edge are available by foot from the state-owned parking area but using a kayak or canoe will let access to well over a mile of productive water above and below the parking area. Fish throughout the two-hour period before and after high tide for best results. A tide range of nearly 8 feet means the fish will generally be on the move and the action may be fast for some minutes, then stop totally, then begin again as groups of school-sized stripers move in and out of the marsh. After about 20 minutes I had my 1st real hard take. The bass ran with the eel, and after counting to five I set up on him. The bass started peeling 40 pound Power-Pro from my reel. This was a much nicer fish. After some minutes I had the bass right in front of me. This wasn’t a big bass, however certainly a keeper. Then, as was my luck fishing eels from shore recently, the hook popped and the fish calmly swam away. What a bummer. (myfishingcapecod.com)
This has happened before. There was a well documented striper kill back in the early 80s in both Scorton Creek and Barnstable Hrb. Hundreds of small to medium stripers died at that time. The fish you found are holdover stripers. For whatever reason they didn’t go south. They ended up deep inside the estuary in search of mummichogs or grass shrimp, the only food available. When we had that cold snap last week, they most likely got trapped in shallow water when portions of the creek froze, and died caused by lack of oxygen. (stripersonline.com)
Barnstable Harbor, Barnstable access from Blish Point – all-tide pay ramp at Blish Point off Millway Rd. From path 28. Sheltered from the north by 12 mile long Sandy Neck, the western harbor affords flats fishing in any wind other than the strongest west or east. To the east are the Barnstable Flats running 5 miles to the Bass Hole/Chase Garden Creek. Can supply some great sight-casting to Stripers all season long. Access the beach along the north side of Sandy Neck down to Scorton Creek from the harbor. . (nesportsman.com)
From 6A in East Sandwich turn onto Ploughed Neck Road. At the end of Ploughed Neck Road, take a right onto North Shore Blvd. Take a right onto Holway Road. This site gives restricted parking opportunities for small ship access and fishing on Scorton’s Creek and Cape Cod Bay. The access area is available through most of the tide range, but at the top of the tidal cycle and earlier throughout high course tides the wet sand area floods, limiting site access. Legal parking spots are posted along the northern boundary fence. Car parking is perpendicular to the fence. There are roughly 5 spaces for vehicles only on the west end and parking for 5 vehicles with small trailers closest to the creek. (Browse around this web-site)
This tendency, coupled with the strong northwesterly winds that accompany late summer and early fall on the Cape draw bass to the Ledge. Three or four days of a strong northwest wind will kick up the Ledge s muddy bottom. The constant pounding of waves and currents over the Ledge disturbs the sandworms that are typically hunkered down in the sediment, making them more susceptible to attack by big stripers. (patch.com)
Over at Fisherman’s World I spoke to Jeremy this week and he said that there’s still a pretty good herring bite taking place in the Harbor. The fish are showing a slight preference for smaller Sabiki rigs he suggested size 6 hooks for your best shot. Otherwise the striper bite in the Housy is still a viable choice but the bite is tough. The fish are schooled up in the deeper water as projected in February an this is when they begin to get a sever case of lock-jaw. On occasion a warm snap like the one predicted for this week can trigger them into feeding so this may be a good call if you are wanting to wet a line in the next few days. (thefisherman.com)
These regions are catch & release only to preserve the sea-run trout resource. They are trout that live part of their life in salt water. The sea trout go down river to saltwater in November now after spawning, to winter there. They begin to return again in April, and all of them are in brackish or new water by mid-May. Around here these trout are called ‘salters’ or ‘sea run brown trout’. Scorton Creek on Cape Cod Bay, in the town of Sandwich is recognized to hold ‘salters’. (capelinks.com)
My fishing partner Woody and I began our trek from Jersey on the morning of September sixth and met up with Captain Jim Auld at the Sandwich Canal ship ramp at 5PM to catch the evening bite. We proceeded east along the beach towards Scorton Ledge and now doubled up with two nice bass in the high 20-pound class fishing eels. I have trolled wire with jigs over the years and it was a welcome change to pitch eels to schools of bass seen on the Simrad display. After pointing out my parents house to Captain Jimmy and Woody, we read another school of bass right off the beach that I fished as a kid and were rewarded with many hookups of bass in the 30-pound class and Woody’s 39-pounder. Pond and Herring Creek — wild trout is sometimes encountered downstream in brackish water. But the most of fishing activity in spring concentrates on the shad run from Hanover west, toward the Indian Head. Afterward in the season, this is a warm-water fishery — usually perch and pickerel — where downstream there’s an variety. Many anglers enjoy walking the marshy riverbanks upstream of the Bridge Street Bridge in Norwell, flycasting the river for some number of sea run species that mix with saltwater prizes like stripers and bluefish. The marsh below is private land, however there are two ship liveries and launch on either side of the river for anglers who want to get out on the river. (boston.com)
