For history near where the SS Edmund Fitzgerald — immortalized in a 1976 hit ballad by Gordon Lightfoot — sank on November 10, 1975. The stretch of water is called the graveyard of the Great Lakes. Nobody knows how many shipwrecks are here, however marine historians figure there are hundreds. Lookout Trail is where to head if you want to see where the big ship went down. (ontarioparks.com)
Feed on insects and crustaceans in cool, shallow waters with good cover for protection. In streams, they usually hide under logs, under-cut riverbanks or in rapids. In lakes they favor water 3-5 metres 10-16 feet deep and a lake bottom strewn with logs or boulders. Brook Trout move easily from shallow to deeper water based on food, temperature, and the time or year. The best baits imitate these live foods. The most successful lures are small spoons or spinners, frequently garnished with a small worm. Casting is the favored technique of fishing. (lakesuperiorpark.ca)
Info about Rivers. Southern Ontario offers a money of fly fishing opportunities. Being enclosed by the great lakes means excellent fishing for Steelhead, Brown Trout and migratory salmon species. There are many coldwater streams to explore offering brook trout, brown trout and rainbow trout. Temperate water fly fishing opportunities for Musky, Pike, Bass and Carp are plentiful. The wild fish structure of the Saugeen steelhead trout run is reliant on many variables. Many dams on the complete watershed supply roadblocks to fish migration. temperate water temperatures in the summer prove deadly to juvenile steelhead on many tributaries. major stem spawning of salmon and steelhead rainbow trout was documented in the past, however success of these endeavours is questionable caused by dramatic changes in spring river goes, sediment loads, temperature and general river conditions on the Saugeen River. To counter act the difficulties in maintaining wild runs of steelhead rainbow trout the Ontario Steelheaders with the cooperation of the MNR and Lake Huron Fishing Club have carried out successful stocking practices of yearling steelhead that are seeded into upper reaches of the Saugeen River since 2006. usually, the lake was recognized to be stocked with as much salmon and trout to sate any fisher. It was one of the reasons why Grandpa could invite Timothy to use up the boiling months of summer with him at the lake house. The only problem was that his lucky pole had been broken on the car ride, his parents had forced the seven year old into a black suit like everyone else, and there could never be Grandpa to fish with again. Now, there was no fish. (tumblr.com)
This became a big problem on Lake Erie’s tributaries. Every year more and more landowners have posted ‘No Trespassing’ signs on their property because they are fed up with garbage left behind and a general lack of respect. If you come upon a posted property do not trespass. If you want to fish there, ask the landowner. If they say ‘no’ respect their wishes. If they let you, do something nice in return like cleaning up garbage along the shore. (thunderbayfishing.com)
You’ll need an Ontario fishing license if you’re planning to fish in Manitoulin Island. Licenses are available at most bait and tackle shops in Ontario, also as through the Ministry of Natural Resources web site. Also, tell yourself with fishing limitations, seasons and other rules. Manitoulin Island is regarded as a part of Zone 10 under Ontario fishing rules, and certain size and creel limitations can be different from limitations elsewhere in the province. A complete guide to Ontario’s fishing rules is available online. (traveltips.usatoday.com)
The high stream gradient and bigger substrates found below the Niagara Escarpment are particularly suited to Atlantic salmon and trout species. But, elevated summer temperatures, habitat fragmentation and silt deposition now still hinder restoration of these species. Since water goes downstream, impacts to the river are carried downstream. The river mouth Credit River Marshes plays an important role in meeting the fish community goals for the watershed and Lake Ontario FMZ 20, by acting as a migratory corridor, and for spawning and nursery habitat for some fish species that live elsewhere for other parts of their life cycle. Southern Ontario has some of the best freshwater fly fishing in North America with reasonable access from a big metropolitan area. Add in a large range of waters, both warmwater and coldwater species, steelhead and salmon runs, and you’ll see see why we’re so proud of our waters and work hard to protect them. And if that was not enough: the Southern Ontario river system is one of the few places on the planet where muskie may be targeted and steadily caught on the fly. (ontariodriftboatguides.com)
Grindstone Creek arises from the Hayesland Swamp and follows an S-shaped path to its confluence with Burlington Bay. The Niagara Escarpment at Waterdown effectively separates the fish communities inside Grindstone Creek. Downstream of the Escarpment, the creek supports some inhabitant and migratory fish species while the fish community upstream of the Escarpment is constrained to inhabitant fish species. Unlike the other big watercourses inside the Conservation Halton watershed, the mouth of Grindstone Creek hasn’t been impacted by harbour development. Consequently, its estuary gives important wetland habitat for some fish species ands hosts the only important spawning run of northern pike inside the Conservation Halton watershed.
