I have USA for a decade now- but my heart is still in Micronesia. When Hawaii’s bill to ban the sale/trade or ownership of shark fins was going through the procedure of becoming law, I knew I had to find a way to have the same ban in the CNMI- of which Saipan is the biggest island. I asked my fishing friend Diego Benavente- long time speaker of the House of Representatives, former LT Governor, and current house member- to introduce a bill that replicated Hawaii’s law. He said he’d think about it. After I gave him more info and asked others with more scientific specialty than myself, he was convinced and presented such a bill. (reefcheck.org)

My research is now entitled examining the correlation of soil nutrients in conjunction with Hawaiian rain- fed agriculture to more understand uala productivity pre-European contact. examining and modeling rain-fed farming systems are important to understanding sustainability in an indigenous, Hawaiian perspective. My research hopes to more understanding of rain-fed agriculture and the rate of productivity, as it was pre-European contact. Now, my project has evolved into sampling different 24 plots of ‘uala across a rainfall gradient to find out best practices for mulching, while at the same time understanding pre-contact farming systems. The Canoe affiliation of Palau held their yearly meeting on January 20th at the Palau NOC Office.   About 30members as well as the CAP board attended the yearly meeting.   The meeting program inlcuded presentation of CAP board of actions of 2010, the review of the 2011 calendar of event for canoe and the financial reporting of Canoe affiliation of Palau to the members.   Also discussed by the members are issues of equipment paddles, canoes, sponsorship and fundraising for the affiliation also as plans and suggestions to send a Canoe National Team to the 2011 Pacific Games.
