My son and I were here in July for a weekend vacation, then came back again for the fishing in October. Both times we chartered fishing trips with Trophy Guide Service. Sparky was our guide and the trip was well worth every penny we paid. In July we went for Striper and caught some big ones, also as one that got away but felt bigger on the line than any of the others we caught. In October we came back for Musky. We did not land any of them but my son caught a big smallmouth bass the second biggest one he is ever caught and he hooked a big walleye, however that one ran under the ship and cut the line on the prop before we could land it. The most sought-after fish on the lake is striped bass, popularly called stripers. While we had high hopes of hooking up with a legal striper or two, conditions on that misty morning weren’t promising. Rhodes clarified that heavy rains the past few weeks and the resultant below average water temperatures had put a damper on the fishing. His eyes scanned the darkening skies as the wind kicked up and it started spitting rain. This front coming through is not helping any either, he lamented. In the spring the stripers are most active – both feeding and spawning – at night, so fishing in daytime also puts us at a drawback. still, we continued to troll patiently in varying depths of water before we got our 1st hit and miss at around 7:30 a. The most practical rods for striper fishing are 7- to 10-weights with enough backbone to manage 27- to 30-foot shooting heads ranging from type 4 sinking to lead-core and tungsten heads. I attach the head with loops to a monofilament-type running line like Rio s clear, intermediate shooting line . 031 diameter . If you don t have or don t like using shooting heads, integrated-head lines like Rio s DC-26 Cold Water Striper line in 350, 450, or 550 grains and alike lines by Scientific Anglers, Airflo, Cortland, and Teeny work well. For surface flies, weight-forward floating lines to go with your rod or floating shooting heads up-lined at least two sizes for your 8-weight rod, use a 10-weight floating head . (flyfisherman.com)
I could tell that Vince was anxious as I reeled in the line and fought with the big fish. It was beautiful to see. I was relieved when it was in close enough for Matt to net it. What a whopper. We set it down on the bait well and calculated it and I kept remarking how big it was-the biggest fish I ever caught. A 24-pound fish could make some number of good fish fries for us. We estimated it to be eight years old. (skunkinthewoodpile.com)
