Queets River Steelhead Fishing Reports

Anglers can of this water from the Hartzell Creek ramp. This is the only area where you ll probably meet other fishermen. To fish upstream, you ll have to park at a turnout and hike. Though the river isn t far from the road, it s very easy to get turned around in the rain forest, particularly since you typically use up as much time walking around fallen trees and side channels as you do moving in a straight line. Wild winter steelhead in Olympic National Park grow big with 20-pounders comparatively common and they return over an expanded period, usually from November through April. Though they’re called winter steelhead, the best fly fishing for them typically occurs between February and April. Because the Queets is a free flowing river with no dam, she may be quite unpredictable in some cases. While my hope is that the Queets stays in form, that’s just not generally the case. A little more north on the Olympic Peninsula, the complete Quillayute system offers unbelievable opportunities for flyfishing most of the year. The Quinault Indian reservation is on the west coast of Washington State, on the Olympic peninsula, between the Pacific ocean and the Pacific Northwest Olympic mountains. The rivers and streams of the Quinault reservation have generally been recognized to be some of the best fisheries in the Pacific Northwest. The Quinault River originates on the west side of the Olympic Mountains in Washington State. The Anderson Glacier Ice Caves, the origin of the river. Lots of water to explore in Olympic National Park for steelhead, salmon, and cutthroat. This is a glacial river where water clearness may be a problem, fishes best at lower goes under 3500 cfs. All fishing opportunities exist inside Olympic National Park, consult a rules book for rules. Access is split between the Lower Queets Valley and Upper Queets Valley. A road washout some number of years ago split the road into these two regions that are accessed individually by following signs from Hwy. 101. At the end of the Upper Queets access road is the Queets Campground. Fording the river in low goes gives access to the Queets River Trail and miles of remote hiking and fishing. Winter months call fly anglers from all over to the Queets not only for its many and big native steelhead but also for the chance to be alone with just the fish and the river. These big natives begin their up river migration in January and typically end sometime in late March. Under-fished. Fish over twenty inches aren’t unusual and there’s a healthy population of mid-size fish also. This big, deep lake is very clear with unbelievable visibility. This isn’t your common lowland lake and neither are the inhabitants. A distinctive strain of rainbows called Beardslee trout, and a sub-species of cutthroat Crescenti trout are both native to the lake. There’s some dry fly action here at times, primarily just fishing a bigger pattern blindly in the chop. The fish are opportunistic and will cruise in search of anything edible. Salmon fishing remains strong. Inclement weather last week hindered anglers at times, however things got back to normal when the weather got nicer. Strong reports are coming from beach anglers on Whidey Island, said Mike Chamberlain of Ted s Sports Center in Lynnwood.
