This 53 foot craft has some remarkable qualities, endearing her to all who step aboard. A big uncluttered cockpit area comes to the direct attention of the discerning angler, as does the full walk around decks. NZ’s biggest livebait tank also stands out, on occasion being perplexed as a spa bath! Since utilising live bait methods has generally been an integral part of our operation, this oversized tank is invaluable. another big fish hold able of storing over three tonnes of ice assures an super new catch upon your return to port – cold drinks also! Fifty rod holders keep rods and reels safe, secure and prepared to use at any time. (fishing.net.nz)
White Island and bordering waters are home to Kingfish up to 60 kgs. The extreme reefy bottom can make it a real challenge to land these fish which are very hard and dirty fighters, and those wishing to target them have to bring lots of terminal tackle. Our techniques of catching these fish vary from drifting both live or dead baits, primarily Makerel, flying fish or squid around reefs 30 -120 mtrs deep using running lines and ball sinkers. Tackle 15 kgs upwards. (diveworks-charters.com)
Moving to baits were being smashed – every bait was to get hooked up on kings and to start they were only 10-15kilo fish but as more baits dropped the fish got bigger with some hard 20kilo fish coming over the side. After wetting everyone’s apatite the choice was made to trawl for a marlin or what ever came our way throughout lunch. With not much happening and being in 500mtrs plus we decided to have a Bluenose drop – We got in 2-3 drops when the wind picked up to 20knts so Rick pulled the plug. The next three hrs were either fun or not fun 35knt winds with a good mtr or two seas hammering us all the way back to Whites – Feeling battered and bruised each one was in bed by 11. Rick Pollock moved to Whakatane from his native Southern California in 1978. Such is the demand now days Rick is chartering all year round and is recognised as one of New Zealand’s top skippers, with an unbelievable knowledge of recreational fishing and a motivation to offer the final experience for all his clients. This is why he’s one of the most successful charter ship businesses in the country, if not the most successful. (spotx.com)
As earlier mentioned, the big news being marlin are in local waters. Few boats put in much effort but most all had some excitement, if not success. If these fish are part of the population that had taken up residence off Tutukaka some weeks ago is pure speculation. The good news is they’re there! Still little bait and no skippies obvious in the predominantly 18 degree water. Back inshore lots of snapper to keep anglers busy, the problem is size. Most seem to be inundated with barely any legal fish. Catches rounded out with a pleasing number of gurnard and some horse kahawai. Few kingis about now, however what’s there are a decent size. Ancient Pohutukawa trees called NZs Christmas tree as in summer they blossom a vibrant red dot the landscape and trout filled freshwater streams flow from the mountains inland. Learning to tie mainline to the leader is important so practice tying the FG knot or a shortened PR knot. Uni knot to attach a leader to a tempt is the next knot to perfect. Learning how to work and cast a stickbait to its best is a must. There’s no use turning up to a hot spot and finding you can not cast far enough to get the tempt into the strike zone. Also, a tempt that spends more time out of the water decreases the time kings can strike it. Get used to how each tempt works and pay attention to every sweep making sure you do your best to keep the tempt in the water and not out of it. (Additional info)

Blue Shark – great to see in their natural environment, this one was around 7 feet in length. It was quite shy when near the ship, however did chew on the prop some number of times. Graceful and beautiful in see in the water. We could lean over and touch it as it swam past and hand feed it fish. They are rare so close to shore in Wellington. Reputed as being in the top 10 most dangerous sharks in the world. Soundtrack is "Five Armies" by Kevin MacLeod, . ncompetech. Com . (Find out more)
