In 2001 City of Portland Landbank Commission teamed up with the state’s Land for Maine’s Future program to save 68 acres of land along the Presumpscot River by creating the Presumpscot River Preserve. The Smelt Hill Dam, erected in 1731, was removed in November 2002. The Presumpscot River Preserve lies on either side of the former dam site and beside Presumpscot Falls—now flowing freely for the 1st time since the dam was built. Sappi hosted an opening ceremony at the Westbrook mill to show off the newly finished fish passage, which the company says cost $4. 8 million. Water levels in area lakes and ponds are usually up, though West great Lake and great Lake Stream are down. With the deep snowpack, water regulators ran high goes on great Lake Stream through April to avoid flooding, however now great Lake Stream is running a little lower than average for this time of year. I’m lucky enough to live on Highland Lake in Bridgton, Maine. Bridgton is a small town of approx. 4, 500 year round residents, nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains.
