Lucy said many of the fish are so chilled they may be caught in a hand held landing net. He also said gill-netters have been going into Wilton Creek and catching hundreds of the fish. I think the fish need a break, he said. I think lots of people will object to a moratoarium but I think a closure could be the smartest thing to do to give the surviving fish a chance to spawn in the spring. (ssentinel.com)
Throughout the 2013-14 winter. Speckled trout are prone to being stunned and killed throughout times of fast temperature declines and these kinds of winter kills have been observed in the past, as well as a minor event last March in a tributary of the North River near Mathews, Virginia. Winter kills are comparatively common for populations of speckled trout in Virginia and North Carolina, which are towards the northern bound of the species’ range and usually exposed to winter temperature extremes. All I can say is "What a Week!!". You could think that with the way the weather was awful we may not have fished but I had the Boyz from Texas, and an intrepid pair they’re. They were well rewarded for their perseverance. The Speck bite is just plain HOT! They caught their dinner for most of the week on Monday and on Wednesday added to it. On Thursday, we chased and caught Stripers and, when the tide forced us to leave the marsh, we caught more Specks. Friday was totally a catch and release Speck day. The dern wind was blowing 4 times harder than predicted, as common, so we hide up in a cove and caught more Specks, usually Kittens the old time word for Dinks . (speckulatercharters.com)
But this day was, by quite lots, the most amazing day of fly fishing I have ever had. Or imagined, truthfully. To have a captain bring you to the right place, at the right time, with the right fly, for such a sustained frenzy of fishing was just astounding. I simply didn’t know there was fishing like this. And I am so happy to share it with such a good friend. I could live to be a hundred and never have another day like that. (dispatchesfromthepotomac.com)
Speckled trout are an inshore species that vary from the Atlantic coast southward, then westward along the Gulf coast all the way to Texas. Their activity peaks throughout the temperate water months of late spring, summer, and early fall. They’re large spread and will steadily strike flies. Specs tend to school so once they’re located, work the area completely. These fish will take poppers and other surface flies. Speckled trout will average 2-4 lbs. Fish up to 6 lbs. Are common. My Saltwater Fly Fishing Journey began a little over two years ago on the Chesapeake Bay with Capt. Chris Newsome. Late September 2013, I rejoined Capt. Chris in search of Striped Bass, Speckled Trout, and Red Drum on the Piankatank River, a tributary of the Chesapeake. The River was generous and Murphy’s Law held true with a dead camera battery previous to netting the last and biggest fish of the day. Still photos got the job done, but. \. (vimeo.com)

Red drum accounted for the 3rd highest number of Citations in 2014 and represented 18 of the year s total number. The 925 red drum Citations in 2014 was a average reduction from the record setting year of 2013, when 995 trophy reds were registered, however still ranks as the second most productive year in the Program s history. Red drum Citations became release only in 2000, and coincidently, that was the 1st time in Tournament history more than 500 Citation red drum were registered in a year. Since 2000, anglers have failed to register less than 500 reds in only two years, as management measures for the sought after red fish preclude the keeping of the big adult fish all along the Atlantic.
