Hi Mike, the Paramount a little after 6 I didn’t see any group waiting to get on. I know this was to be 14 to 15 people. I have to say I was uneasy as to not knowing your faces since I’m new to the group. I didn’t see anybody I could recognize from the photos online. I couldn’t go up to strangers and ask if they were from the "meetup group". I turned around and went home. Im sure the fishing yesterday was great, great weather and I was upset to have missed it. Maybe at some point the goup can meet at a dunkin donuts or something like that so we can at least recognize each other. (meetup.com)
From Brielle was on the hunt for cod and ling, with customers hooking into as the temperatures improved. The ship will run 12 hour 5 a. M. To 5 p. M. wreck trips Saturday and Sunday. Under the path 35 bridge lies Bogan’s Basin, home port to the 125-foot Jamaica, a big deep-sea fishing-party ship, which sails year-round. It’s also home to the Atlantis also as the Paramount, which was one of the fishing boats used to rescue survivors of the Morro Castle, a ship that sank off the coast of Asbury Park in 1934, killing roughly 134 passengers. In spite of storm conditions, Capt. John Bogan, his sons Capt. John Bogan Jr. And Capt. Jim Bogan, and some number of of their mates and captains from other fishing boats boarded the Bogans’ 60-foot Paramount and headed to sea. The men of the Paramount rescued 67 people. (em.gmnews.com)
But, instead of spooling monofilament line, I’d strongly propose you think about the new braided lines of Spectra or Dyneema. Braided line has virtually no stretch, and its very good diameter enables you to use half the sinker weight that you are usually accustomed to using with heavy diameter mono. This proves to be a distinct advantage, as you may be able to readily feel the strike of a ling in 250 feet of water, and all the while using just a 6- or 8-oz sinker as opposed to 16 ounces of lead were you using mono. This is particularly appropriate when there is a strong current running on the offshore grounds, as you may be able to still hold bottom with relative ease. (gameandfishmag.com)

The Morro Castle party began the moment the ship pulled away from its East River pier in New York. This was not some stuffy North Atlantic liner, however rather one catering to a crowd of young people — much like the fun ships of today’s Carnival Cruise Lines. The ships of the Ward Line — the Atlantic Gulf & West Indies Steamship Co. — were called the Havana ferries; they linked New York with Tampico, Vera Cruz and Havana, carrying not only freight but passengers bent on escaping the cares of Depression life. Dr. Ginther, who lives at Norris- town, Pa, said the 1st knowledge that he had of the fire on board the Morro Castle was at about 6 a. M. MY ‘Wife and I had risen early and I was just starting to dress when my wife. Who had looked out of the port- bole in our cabin, turned to me and said. ‘ there is a ship on fire right beside us. ‘ I rushed to the porthole, looked out, and there was the Morro Castle, all ablaze, It seemed as if she was right beside us, about 300 yards away. Tom Torresson, the 17-year-old helper purser, roused many passengers from their staterooms and guided them to the deck. Seeing the tall teenager in his white uniform, someone approached him and turned over a boy, Bobby, about age 12, who was alone and badly burned. Tom took off his lifejacket and attempted to put it on Bobby. But the boy resisted because the lifejacket hurt his burned skin. Tom put his lifejacket back on. He calmed the boy, told him they were going overboard and that once in the water the boy should get around Tom s back and put his arms around his neck. They leapt into the water, then the boy grabbed onto Tom. (seagirtlighthouse.com)
