In 1973 Mr Hill was a founding member of the North Otago Paraplegic and Physically Disabled affiliation now Paralympics New Zealand and helped fundraise for the North Otago Clubrooms in Oamaru. He arranged the building of a hot mix track for wheelchair sprint and slalom race training and organised competitive wheelchair games. He managed the 1978 National Games in Oamaru at Waitaki Boys’ College. He chaired the Paralympics New Zealand National Sports Technical board and provided support for the New Zealand team at the 1980 Paralympics. He spearheaded fundraising plans for wheelchair racers to partake in the 1981 Japan Wheelchair Marathon, the 1984 and 1992 Paralympics and made New Zealand Road Wheelers for half and marathon events. The Whakat ne District coastline stretches to the west at Otamarakau. Most of the coastal land is Council-owned. West of Whakat ne there aren’t surf lifesaving patrols, and the beaches are noted for fishing rather than swimming. Surfcasting is well-liked and successful at all of these beaches. The major access points are at Coastlands, Golf Links Road, Thornton, Walker Road, Matat , and access points along the State Highway west of Matat , as well as the Pikowai camping ground. A big North Island river, the Rangitaiki, joins the sea at Thornton. This is the major beach used by Edgecumbe residents. (whakatane.govt.nz)

Mr Pouwhare portrayed how Matahina had been contested for hundreds of years between Ng ti Haka Patuheuheu and Ng ti Awa. He referred to the Matahina lands as whenua tautohetohe contested lands or whenua matewaka k mehameha greatly prized lands . Mr Pouwhare stated that land at Matahina had been taken from Ng ti Haka Patuheuheu through the actions of the Native Land Court in the 1880s, and by the hand of Crown buying agents and other persons. Being parked up here at John’s gives us a chance to get some more chores done – though they do seem to be never ending!  One pressing matter was to go to to the kitchen tap faucet to you foreigners! which had worked on a leak and had become a bit wobbly.  So I went off to the motorhome shop to buy a substitute, however who do I find parked at the RV centre but Jim & Judy.  seemingly the car park area is a parking area for NZMCA members.  After a fast catch up, I bought a new tap, then headed off into town to get some shopping done, only to meet up with Bill & Estelle in the supermarket carpark!  They had stayed in Ohope the last night and were just stocking the larder before heading off back north. There are some easy steps that fishers can take to minimise their affect on nesting sites. Most importantly, respect the temporary fences and signs that our volunteers put out around the birds nesting sites. NZ dotterel eggs are nearly impossible to see if you don t know what you need made harder if you’re driving down the beach in a car.
