Orofino Idaho Steelhead Fishing Report

The Clearwater part of big river, public steelhead water. The Highway follows the river all the way from it is confluence with the Snake River to its headwaters where the Selway and Lochsa Rivers join. Access is easy and the season begins early each August and ends in late March. Winter and early spring fishing may be weather dependent but the fall water conditions are reliably good. (orvis.com)

This part is recognized to produce lots of Wild Spring Chinook and some of the bigger fish caught yearly are taken from this part of the river. This is another Passing Through part of the river. Most of the fish moving up through this part are headed to the upper head waters of the Clearwater like the Locsa R, Selway R. And South fork of the Clearwater. I ve heard good reports on bass, perch, crappie and trout, and I m not surprised. October is magic for bass and perch, and the summerlike weather is keeping warmwater fish more active than common. As temperatures cool, the bass and perch action may slow down, however the trout bite should pick up. Most of the panfish are caught in and around the narrows using crappie jigs, worms and small spinners or crankbaits. You may be able to hunt smallmouth bass near rocky points or largemouth bass in the weed beds using soft plastics, spinnerbaits or jigs. Trout fishermen typically troll parallel to the banks or use some mix of worms, marshmallows and Power Bait from the shore. (idahostatesman.com)

Where the wading is easy. B Strain steelhead are some of the biggest in the world. Specimens of over 30 pounds have been landed. Average fish are 10-15 pounds. Wild runs are depressed, however stable. Dworshak National Fish Hatchery at Orofino pumps about a 2. 15 million smolts into the system every year for a return of about 20, 000 adult steelhead. It’s the biggest steelhead hatchery in the world. When the adult steelhead return to the Clearwater at Lewiston, Idaho they’re 460 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 725 feet above sea level. 01/17/16 — With winter time in Shasta County being the slowest time of the year for fishing local waters, I have found myself looking for fishing opportunities in other states that experience some of their best fishing of the year throughout this time, particularly for steelhead. We do have some great fishing in California throughout the winter, however drought and El Nino can make scheduling a trip a big risk. I still love California steelhead, however for the past two years, I have been traveling north for a 2 day steelhead fishing trip up in Orofino, Idaho. The best kokanee fishing on Dworshak Reservoir is typically in April, May and June, with most of the action occurring between the dam and Dent Bridge.   Water levels in Dworshak are typically down as far as 80 feet in the early spring but rise to almost full pool by June.   ship anglers trolling gradually with weighted line or 1-3oz weights with standard spinner-gear with hooks baited with maggots or corn are reporting just catches.   Rainbow and cutthroat trout fishing will also be picking up with the start of warmer weather, particularly at mouths of tributary streams.
