We’ll instead to the edge of the golf course. Two mounds, once looking at points, are hidden in the woodland here. Years of kids running and cycling over them have made them lower and a concentrated growth of trees has blocked the view. If you go looking for them they’re hidden now behind yew hedges. From the top of the vista, having stopped to look back towards the lake, we take a path towards the Temple. This eighteenth century garden feature was recently restored and holds a small museum with many interesting photographs of the gardens and different artefacts found in the grounds. The public park, Wanstead Park, holds remnants of the formal gardens, landscape park and lakes produced for Wanstead House. Since 1882 it was a public park managed by the Conservators of Epping Forest. Wanstead Hall was built c. 1550 in the hunting park produced when part of the forest was enclosed. In 1667 it was assumed by Sir Josiah Child, who laid out formal gardens. In 1715 the old Tudor house was replaced by the palatial Wanstead House and the parkland and gardens were extravagently worked on during the C18th for the Earls of Tylney. Catherine Tylney Long, who hereditary in 1812, and her husband William Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley sought advice from Humphry Repton ensuing in new water features and planting. Daniel then time, as we were to be home by 4 o’clock. How quickly the time could go, we could change the water in the jars with hopes that the fish could still be alive when we got home for Mum to see. Then the long walk home. At home Mum could be waiting for us, with dinner prepared. After dinner, it was time for a strip wash, we had no bathroom in those days, then off to bed. Susan and I shared the same room, we could talk about what we had done and seen that day and what we had enjoyed most about Wanstead Park. Susan being two years younger than myself could generally fall asleep before I did. (francisfrith.com)
If you only have restricted time, walk along the path that runs west of the River Roding, south from the cycle path bridge to the place where the path meets the City of London Cemetery fence. Other well-liked spots are the west end of Heronry Pond and the channel between Rookery and Lincoln Island, in the Ornamental Waters. There, tangles of overhanging branches and restricted disturbance have an evident attraction for birds wanting to concentrate on their fishing. But pretty much anywhere there’s water is worth a look, as well as Shoulder of Mutton Pond and Alexandra Lake on Wanstead Flats. (wansteadbirding.blogspot.com)
I had work throughout the summer of 2003. I visited Slough House and was confronted with a big shock to see the bailiff and some other guys loading totally tons of dead catfish and carp into the back of some flatbed lorries. There had been a big algae bloom on the lake which had resulted in the fish deaths. This was one of saddest days in my fishing history which still makes me think how big some of these fish may have got to by now if this hadn’t of happened. As the lake was closed I moved to another venue some miles away in Rayleigh, called Oak Lodge. Some of you may have heard of this venue as this was the place where Steve Bond had tried to assert a record catfish of 99LB which had been imported. (thespecimenangler.com)

Head to the benches north of the Kyoto garden or the grass south of Holland House. Holland Park can be in one of London’s most exclusive neighbours, however it’s open to all and has plenty to offer. Alongside buildings for football, golf, cricket and netball, it gives a base to Kensington & Chelsea s Ecology Centre, so with forward planning you could hold your picnic on the same day that the venue hosts special events or educational visits. In contrast to the destruction of 92 of the Hainault Forest to much public outrage in the 1850s, Redbridge is home to some protected open spaces. These are three hundred acres of countryside and a petting zoo at Hainault Forest Country Park, a wildlife sanctuary and woodland at Roding Valley Park, scenery and fishing lakes at Fairlop Waters Country Park, the ornamental gardens of the award-winning Valentines Park and its late-seventeenth-century mansion, also the ancient oak trees and meadows in the conservation area of Claybury Woods and Park. With so much available greenery, Redbridge offers one of the highest-quality living environments in London. (Visit the site)
But we all know that this is mainly a winter migrant in the UK when their numbers increase one hundredfold literally on the summer residents. The Wanstead Flats/Park patch isn’t a noted site for Teal, where only small numbers appear, and somewhat irregularly, throughout the winter. On last weekend’s Wetland Bird survey on the patch, we counted 22 Teal in Wanstead Park and this morning one of the local birders counted 26 on a single lake in the Park – possibly a patch record – particularly if any had also been on the Ornamentals or Alexandra lakes simultaneously. The following article was divided into three major parts. In the 1st of these pp. 184 235 each part relates to the whole of the ancient parish, but the period covered differs: the introduction, and the sections on agrarian history, manors, the abbey buildings, and charities, are taken to the present time; local government is taken in two consecutive sections up to 1888; the left over sections are taken to 1830. The second major part pp. 235 48 relates only to the area inside the present borough of Barking, and the 3rd pp. 249 67 to that inside the borough of Ilford. In the second and 3rd parts the sections treating the different religious denominations are taken from 1830 onwards, and those on local government from 1888; each of the other sections is complete, without limitations of date.
