Shore fishing is a fast and simple way to take pleasure in some of Oahu’s fishing without giving up your complete day to the sport, as you’ll have to on many guided fishing tours. A basic hand pole and some bait like shrimp, squid or oama are all you need. Whipping and spinning are the common methods for shore fishing, although some are incorporating fly casting into their repertoire. A range of fishing tours are available during Oahu for those who favor to get out on the water. These tours will supply all the supplies you need and can guide you to some of the best spots. FADs fish aggregation devices bordering the island are placed to tempt certain types of fish and supply a useful guide toward prime places. (traveltips.usatoday.com)
Hawaii is an angler’s paradise where some records are set on a yearly base. In 1996, an angler reeled in a 228-pound bigeye tuna off Kona, while in 1999 a lucky fisherman caught a 365-pound swordfish. Visitors to the island paradise typically plan on either doing some scuba diving also as saltwater or freshwater fishing. In an effort to protect its natural resources and beauty, the state of Hawaii has instituted some fishing rules, which cover the species that may be harvested, the sizes and also the weight limitations. Learning about Hawaii fishing rules may help make your stay enjoyable and protect the environment simultaneously. (trails.com)
Catching the ulua, aka the giant trevally, is because for celebration. Prize specimens weigh in at 100 pounds or more. The bait fish alone weighs between two and three pounds — anything smaller and most uluas aren't interested. Using a technique called slide baiting, the line has a stopper on the end and carries a 10-oz, or bigger, sinker. These special sinkers have a hook meant to catch on the rocky bottom. The line is cast, then the individual hook leaders are baited and slid down the line. Many baits increase your chances of catching an ulua. When the fish is hooked, a special gaff attached to a rope is lowered to just below the fish. (livestrong.com)

I grew up here so I do not really know the english names of all the fish. Papio is a trevally jack family good fighting, good eating. After reaching about 15lbs. They are called ulua and are the most sought after record is around 190# . Some man caught a 563# sea bass here while fishing for ulua from the beach. Moana is a kind of goatfish good eating and good bait for ulua. I think, wa’a nui is a snapper? Do not know english equiv. Of lai – leatherback or something. It is a good fighter. I ate it in Tahiti and it was good, however nobody here really eats it, we use the skin on lures. (fishmaui.com)
I usually just use live and cut bait, usually white squid. I cut it into triangles of different sizes and whip that through the water a bit. See if anything comes out for lunch. You have got to really work an area to see if it holds fish. Attempt skimming the bait across the top of the water, fast. Attempt it slow, allowing it to sink a bit before you pull it again to the top on your retrieve. Attempt pulling it through the center of the water fast. In specific, I have found small jacks like this presentation and will attack squid like this pretty frequently. You will also get the barracudas if they’re about. (aimforawesome.com)
Spear fishing-divers fishing in navigable waters, must mark their position with a dive flag and must not surface more than 100 feet from the flag, except in an emergency. The related rules state that, "Dive flags displayed on the surface of the water must be a minimum of 12 by12 inches. If mounted on a vessel greater than 16 feet in length, dive flags must be a minimum of 20 by 20 inches and displayed with a blue and white alpha flag. ". (ehow.com)
Most of Hawaii s Islands don’t have any collection for aquarium fish. The Hawaii tropical fish collector dives for the most part in fishing grounds which have been collected from for many years. Rotation of fishing spots and never over collecting has ensured a sustainable business which will be able to continue forever at current rates! This voluntary subscription to self-guideline has proven prudent over time and negates the need for more restrictive rules. (hawaiitropicalsaltwateraquariumfish.com)
We also greatly recommend looking into online reviews in places like Yelp and Trip consultant. Nothing can ensure a perfect experience, however taking this one smart step will head off lots of possible mistakes. Consistent low ratings and complaints are a sure sign you may want to move on to the next choice. If you make that effort you may want to don t have problem finding one or some fishing tours who are well-established in the Islands and deserve your business. Still, here are some more things you may want to know, particularly if this is your 1st time going the charter path. (honoluluhi5.com)
As many accomplished bonefish anglers will tell you, the fish may be quite skittish as they enter smaller water, making for tougher going than in many fly-fishing situations. That means anglers must be able to place a fly on the water without a big slap, something they can get away with in other locales. Because the wind was up and I was concentrating on cutting the line through it, I most likely spooked a good number of fish that may have sent the reel squealing had I been more cautious with my casts and dropped the shrimp more softly in front of one of the vacuum cleaners.
