Nehalem River Fishing Regulations

As listed Fishing guideline pamphlet, the bag bound for non fin-clipped Chinook salmon in the Nehalem Basin is one fish per day and five for the season through Sept. 15. Beginning Sept. 16, the bag bound will increase to two non fin-clipped Chinook per day. No more than 10 non fin-clipped Chinook can be taken for the Nehalem per year, in aggregate with other North Coast bays and streams. (dfw.state.or.us)

The Little Nestucca, is open May 23-July 31 for adipose fin-clipped spring Chinook salmon. Spring Chinook aren’t stocked in this river and the fishery is restricted to a small number of strays from other rivers. Three Rivers is open April 1 – July 15 below the hatchery for adipose fin-clipped spring Chinook and adipose fin-clipped summer steelhead. While Three Rivers receives significant fishing pressure, fishing success may be good as fish tend to congregate in the river below the hatchery. Bank access and parking are available off of Hwy 22 now downstream of the hatchery. Small 1/8 or 1/16 oz jigs floated under a bobber may be efficient for summer steelhead on Three Rivers and other regions. (dfw.state.or.us)

Back to my presentation; the gentleman had the flyer we had sent out to our membership for our end-of-year donation ask, highlighting our success on gaining more riparian area on private forest lands for the fish we care so much about. He was visibly upset about the ‘land grab’ that was going on as was many private landowners throughout the months-long discussion with the Oregon Department of Forestry. After explaining why I was so passionate about deadly summer water temperatures in comparatively intact watersheds and their relation to healthy riparian buffers, I think he could see my point. Usually, the bulk of the North Fork’s yearly release of 90, 000 fin-clipped winter steelhead smolts was made at the hatchery. Starting in 2012, just half of the releases will be made there. The other half will be split from downriver release sites, one about halfway to tidewater and other just above tidewater. While Bradley said the effect is uncertain till biologists can study returns, this switch at least has the possible of slowing some of the adult steelhead and improving the fishing in the lower river, which most fish pass through quickly today. The 1st class of fish returning after the change will come back in the last weeks of 2013, with the full effect to be seen across age classes starting the winter of 2014-15. There are some number of factors that helped protect the Salmonberry. One is its remoteness. Some logging roads approach it in the upper reaches, and the Nehalem River road lets access at the mouth. The Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad, now not operational, follows the river from the mouth to the upper reaches. If there had been a road following the river canyon, as on the Wilson River to the south, the story may have been different. Another factor was management by benign neglect : except for some failed hatchery plants in the early 1960 s, the river was free of hatchery influence. The period of comparative calm following the last Tillamook Burn allowed the watershed to recover untouched, till timber harvest began in the 1990 s. (nativefishsociety.org)

This river isn’t stocked with steelhead, they are usually native and you can not keep the natives. If you catch a hatchery fish, the adipose fin could be clipped which is the small fin at the lower part of their back. Most of the Deschutes River remains open to fishing without any extra time limitations. The 2:00PM closure effects the last 23. 5 miles of the river from Macks Canyon to the mouth. Water temperatures in this part have improved somewhat, however still warrant caution from anglers when fishing these waters. If temperatures continue to drop with cool water releases from Pelton Dam joint with more better weather, we may see that restriction lifted. It’s wise to still carry a thermometer and limit fishing when temps surpass 65.  All of the river upstream of Macks Canyon 75+ miles remains open for normal fishing hours. Fisheries off California and southern Oregon have been poor since 2005. In California and Oregon south of Cape Falcon, where Sacramento fish stocks have the biggest affect, the commercial and recreational salmon fishery had an average economic value of $103 million per year between 1979 and 2004.
