This river best kept secret. The stream is in Monroe and Washington Counties in the Marietta Unit of the Athens Ranger District. The upper half of the river has a average gradient and was recognized to produce some nice smallmouth bass and sunfish. The mid-reaches are home to the Ohio muskellunge – a few of Ohio Muskies are caught and released yearly. The lower part of the river has a slow gradient and has long deep pools. Many Ohio River fishes migrate up into this part of the Little Muskingum and can supply some "reel" fun. (fs.usda.gov)
After about an hour, we floated around a bend and to the right above us on the bank were three empty lawn chairs enclosed by beer cans. My mind drifted back to my youth when my Grandpa Hessey and I could sit on the banks of the Fostoria Ohio reservoirs with cane poles, minnows, and round red bobbers. When that bobber could go down I could yank white crappies up, out, over my head, and onto the bank behind. And we could laugh! I told my ship mates the story. They weren’t interested but Pat softly brought me back to reality and suggested that I should cast beyond a log which was running diagonally from the bank. (fishinglifeblog.com)
The Ohio in the mid-1870s when a procedure was worked on for manufacturing garment buttons from mussel shells. The U. S. Bureau of Fisheries estimated the yearly harvest of mussels from the Muskingum River from 1912-1915 at 700 tons. The development of plastics in the mid-1900s caused the mussel shell button business to fade, however the cultured pearl business in Asia brought the harvest of freshwater mussels back to a high. Commercial harvesting of freshwater mussels was banned in 1974 in Ohio. (muskingumriver.org)
On Saturday, Partners for Clean Streams and Bass Pro Shops will team up to spread the word on environmental awareness among the throngs of fisherman working the spawning run on the Maumee River. A table will be set up from 7 a. M. To 4 p. M. Along River Road at Side Cut Metropark and volunteers will be passing out bags and asking the fishermen to gather any trash they meet on their river visit. There will also be educational info on the possible harm that fishing line, lead sinkers, and hooks can have on wildlife and the river. (toledoblade.com)
Alum creek camping in columbus is laid back and it puts you inside close closeness to 5 or 6 different bodies of water to fish from. Alum creek resevoir carries bass ctfish and walleye as does the adjoining Hoover resevoir. Personally, my favorite spot is the scioto river after the griggs resevoir dam. Catfish lie in the center of the pool just under the dam, and more downstream you may be able to easily catch dozens of crawfish which work well catching the smllmouth. (Browse around here)
In Missouri, as an example, Roubidoux Creek in the center of the state used to be recognized for its remaining smallmouth bass fishing. But fish populations plummeted in the 1990s, due primarily to an over abundance of otters. Roubidoux had the highest density of otters I d seen anyplace in the state, said Dave Hamilton, a wildlife research biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation. But we’re now down to just a few of otters living on the stream. The fish populations are starting to recover. Last year we started to see a raise in the number of bass in some year-classes. His new one came on Sept. 25, on Leesville Lake in New Philadelphia with fishing partner Mike Drazenovich. Before releasing the fish back into the water, Moseley and Drazenovich estimated it to be about 41 inches long and weigh 25 pounds. That is not quite enough to meet the criteria free of charge membership in Ohio’s Huskie Muskie Club the minimum is 42 inches, but it was a milestone for the veteran angler, who still likes to get out on the water at the era of 81. Piedmont is a bass lake and both largemouth and smallmouth bass are found to the delight of the bass fishing crowd. As indicated by the new Ohio Division of Wildlife fisheries survey almost a 4th of the fishing pressure on this well-liked lake is directed to putting bucketmouths and smallies in the ship. The survey indicated that largemouth bass are available up to 19 inches and smallmouth bass aren’t far behind at 18 inches. Most of the bass are smaller but the chance for a trophy fish exists. Few Ohioans ever experience the airborne antics of a hooked smallmouth bass and Piedmont is the place to make it happen. (piedmontmarina.mwcd.org)
