The best ploy here is to fish for the smelt 1st, having a can full of new bait, with which you may be able to attempt for the bass. To catch the smelt buy the smallest feathers you may be able to find, size 6, 8 or 10 hooks. Jig these as if for mackerel close to the promenade wall for best results. You can also pick up small pollack, all make great live baits. Attach these live baits to a single circle hook and fish at the far end of the promenade, use as little lead as you may be able to get away with. The bass here have been recognized to take bacon as they were used to gorging themselves on it over the summer due to crabbers . (wheretoseafish.com)
Carp up to 30lb in weight are caught along the towpath and bandstand area. The Lower Stour and Harbour are managed as a sports fishery where all species must be returned to the water unharmed. This is for the benefit of all, making sure long-term sustainable fishing which will benefit both the angler and Christchurch. Fishing catch and release is practised on all the big sport fisheries across the world, and is something the holders Sembcorp Bournemouth Water have decided to continue following interview with different stakeholders inside the harbour. This specific off the A 3049 dual carriageway. This is a terribly dangerous road to park on, however there are grass verges and no yellow lines; exercise caution. Fishing is comfy off the towpath. Eels, bass and average sized flounders are the mainstay for the summer months. In winter it’s all change. Flounders seem to run up to 4lbs, however you’ve done well to get one above that weight. Strong size 2 hooks on a ‘flapper’ are all that are needed, but attempt ‘pop-up’ anti-crab floats on your snoods. Floating beads will work as attractors and anti-crabbers. (sportingfish.co.uk)
With the super’s shallow draught I was able to skim over rocks that could rip the prop off an outboard. My 1st cast was towards a jumble of rocks in no more than eighteen inches of water and the tempt was taken as I tightened down on the airborne braid. Bass in shallow water are really feisty. They can’t go deep so they go away – fast. Because an unanchored kayak is so light in the water it doesn’t take most of a pull to turn it. I played the bass and in a way the bass played me. We met at the side of the kayak and I scooped it in by put a hand under its stomach. (fishingmagic.com)
Decided to change my spinner to one with a little red eye form on the spoon and that seemed to spur the fish into attacking it. We were happy that the shoal had chosen to be there for us and I found it thrilling really being able to see the fish have a go at my bait. We found the answer to catching was to fish at one depth for some yards, then to change depth, so covering more water on our retrieves. We starting hitting into fish, however unfortunately, because the mullet had bony mouths, we could lose half of the fish we hooked before we could net them. (grfishingmemories.blogspot.com)
Another way of attacting fish to your hooks is to use liquid berley tossed on the surface of the water. You need two twenty litre buckets. The 1st can holds your frozen berley. Reduce the second can down on a rope so it fills with water then haul it back up. Mix some of your frozen berley into the can of water and stir with a stick. Every five minutes or so cast a cup full of this mixture down across the water below. You’ll be amazed what a difference this will make. Frequently you can attact big schools of mullet, and other fish, with this technique. Using berley will generally be more efficient than fishing without it. (Read on this site)
In reality Phil, you may want to be able to quite easily break that 100 barrier from the shores around Portland and Weymouth. Shore Rockling must be your number one target species now of the year. I can give you two exact marks that I know of the top of my head that hold Shore Rockling, both at Portland Bill. The 1st is straight down the Southern side of Pulpit Rock and the secend is down the side of the ledge with the crane. Shore Rockling may be easily mistaken if you aren’t familiar with your Rockling species. It only has 3 beards, or barbels and unlike 3 Bearded Rockling, it’s darker and has a hard brown colouration. West Bay is at the western extremity of Chesil Beach and is the Port that used to serve Bridport. There’s a harbour that’s home to fishing charter boats and fishing and crabbing may be enjoyed around the old harbour or the new pier extensions. East Pier is the shorter of the two harbour arms and forms a stop to Chesil Beach. The West Pier is pretentiously named the Jurassic Pier though it’s nothing but a concrete eyesore. The afternoon was spent at the BS stretch at Bransford, and with low, temperate water it wasn’t going to be easy. I had four chub and a barbel of about eight, so not bad considering conditions. There have been some number of nines and a ten from Bransford this season, and a nicer bit of river you couldn’t ask for, with correct steps and secure car parking close to your swim. I’ll be back in a week or so, after a flush of rain has freshened the river and got the barbel moving. (barbelsociety.co.uk)
