We headed back to the village in time to learn about different syrups the local Iroquoian people used for hundreds of years, and possibly more back. On tap was birch syrup which has a distinctive taste and resembles molasses and two different kinds of maple syrup: medium and amber. Taste them and choose for yourself which one you favor. Afterward on there was a sweet water demonstration and, in spite of it being early in the season, a crowd amassed to learn how maple trees were tapped, the water boiled, then consumed before modern technology facilitated the task. A jewel of the Mountsberg Conservation Area, The Mountsberg Reservoir is a big water control reservoir and important natural waterway in the watershed. The reservoir was produced by building a dam on Bronte Creek where it goes through the park on its way to the Lake Ontario. The wetlands, inside the park and to the north of the reservoir are considered provincially important, as they different habitats for unusual birds, amphibians and reptiles. (geocaching.com)

Conservation Halton supplements our rainfall data with the data collected from these rain gauges. The more rain gauges out there in the watershed, the more info we can use for our storm models. Engineers are better able to predict the impacts on the wetlands, creeks and flood prone regions inside the watershed. The original rain gauge network we built was depending on the assumption that the most serious storms we could be forecasting for could be hurricanes. Because of weather change, we re now seeing a difference in the types of storms in the watershed. Storms earlier dispersed across a larger area; but, now the data shows that storms became more convective in nature. (Visit this site)

The Robert Edmondson Conservation Area is a brand new addition to the parks and conservation regions in the Burlington area. This calm park, featuring a trail that winds through wetlands and woods, is previously called the Burns Conservation Area, however was renamed in honour of Robert Edmondson’s almost four decades of devoted service to the Halton Watershed and Niagara Escarpment. The intention is that good water messages will be moved back to children s classrooms where teaches can draw upon these curriculum-linked messages. Burlington’s weather is usually continental with warm wet summers and cold, dry winters. This is moderated by the closeness of Lake Ontario, which tends to decrease temperature extremes. Monthly mean temperatures vary from 22 degrees centigrade 71 degrees F in July to -5 degrees centigrade 23 degrees F in January. The yearly precipitation consists of about 28 inches of rain and 51 inches of snow. Easterly winds off the open waters of Lake Ontario may add considerably to local snowfall but the current winds are from the southwest. Each season brings something new along the nature trails at Parkhill Conservation Area. The 800 hectare conservation area is the result of efforts to control serious flooding and soil wearing away problems downstream. The Parkhill Dam and reservoir were constructed in 1969 to create a storage area to regulate the water flow of Parkhill Creek. The recreational opportunities include canoeing, windsurfing, fishing, hiking, snowmobiling and toboganning. Inside the conservation area is a campground building called "Great Canadian Hideaway".
